GAME BLOG: Central girls soccer 3, Lafayette 0
by Ross Martin
Tuesday, April 7, 2009

As Lafayette coach Brad Spinner helped Rachelle Ashford off the field, Central’s coaching staff offered its assistance.

“We’re OK,” Spinner said. “We’re getting pretty good at this.”

The battered Fighting Irish saw five players leave the pitch in their loss to Central. Adding to defender Sam Hummer’s season-ending injury during basketball season, Lafayette managed to put a patchwork lineup together against the more skilled Indians.

Trying to boost his defense, Spinner moved midfielder Ciara Shepherd on to the back line to help account for the absence of Hummer, the team’s strongest defender last season. Junior captain Brooke West, another defender, also missed Tuesday’s game due to a trip.

So already without two starters, freshman forward Miranda Tolar left during the first half with a leg injury and did not return.

Midfielders Caitlin Anderson and Katie Vessar were also injured, along with defender Taylor Riggs. All three returned to the field at some point.
