City Workers Say No More Hires
by Bob Heater
Tuesday, April 28, 2009

Firemen, police, animal control, payroll and sewage treatment. City departments that have money questions for city hall and the city council.

Over 30 St. Joseph city employees from various departments met Tuesday night at the firefighter's union hall to discuss city spending and the plan to possibly hire add as many as 17 new city employees. That might include 7 new police officers.

A committee of city workers has been talking to city manager, Vince Capell, and city council members about the cost of health insurance going up, no raises for city workers and expenditures like a charitable donation of $200,000.

Shawn Henderson is a veteran city police officer. He told the gathering that the city continues to spend and commit to projects they don't have the money for. Henderson also compared other city insurance costs to St. Joseph employee rates. He said the city continues to spend money they don't have while city employees go without raises.

The workers are wanting their voices heard and say they will continue to gather support to halt the hiring of new employees and possibly find a better way to provide insurance for city workers.
