Irina Falconi was doubly successful Saturday.

The Georgia Tech player advanced to the finals in the singles bracket and earned a share of the doubles title at the Heartland USTA Women’s Classic.

Falconi and Ashley Weinhold defeated Caitlin Whoriskey and Chelsea Orr, 6-4, 7-6, (6) to win the doubles championship at the Noyes Tennis Complex. The two champions earned checks of $320 a piece and a necklace. This was Falconi’s first appearance in a doubles final, though Weinhold has seven doubles final victories to her credit.

“It was a little different playing with Irina because we have never played together before this tournament,” the 20-year-old Weinhold said. “We wanted to stay aggressive but be a little bit stubborn and not make to many unforced errors. We really fought hard, and it paid off.”

Weinhold is finished with the tournament and caught a flight to Vancouver, Canada, for a $75,000 tournament today. But Falconi still has work left to do after breezing by Sabrina Santamaria, 6-2, 6-0, in the semifinals and advancing to singles championship. Ironically, Falconi now will face Whoriskey­­­­, whom she just beat in the doubles championship game.

“This is the first time I have ever played a girl in the doubles finals that I will also be playing in the singles final,” Falconi said. “We both are out there to win, so it really makes no difference to me who I play.”

Whoriskey had a bit more of a challenge with Maria Sanchez, winning 6-3, 5-7, 7-5 in a hard-fought contest.

The final starts at 11 a.m. at Noyes.

“The great thing about this tournament is it will fund various activities throughout the year for us,” said tournament press aide Cindy Cornelius, “including funding free tennis lessons for the kids as well as allowing us to give out a couple scholarships.”
