Unseasonably low temperatures, a brisk breeze and cool play all marked the quarterfinals of St. Joseph Country Club’s Club Championship.
Harry Roberts’ steady stroke set the tone for Saturday’s match play. Roberts earned a spot in today’s semifinals with a 4-and-3 victory against Jim Coleman.
“Nothing exciting, really,” Roberts said. “I just think I hit almost every fairway and had lots of two-putts. That’s what you need to do in match play. Stay focused, hit the fairways and greens.”
Roberts bogeyed two holes — No. 5 and No. 12, where he three-putted — but had two birdies.
Brad Nurski, playing in his first Club Championship at Country Club, also played his way into the semifinals. Nurski won 3-and-1 against Bob Housh.
But it didn’t come easily. After going up five at No. 13, Nurski bogeyed three straight holes and needed clutch play down the stretch to close out the match.
“I didn’t play great,” said Nurski, who is coming off a second-place finish at the Missouri Stroke Play championship last week in Cape Girardeau. “I’m going to have play much better (today).”
Roberts faces Matt Thrasher this morning, while Nurski plays Derek Baade. The winners then pair off in the afternoon for the championship.
