The nation's health-care debate, with the shouting at town-hall meetings and political rhetoric emerging from all corners, has local impacts. In Missouri's case, a report released on Friday says, premiums for job-based health insurance have increased at a rate nearly four times greater than workers' earnings this decade.
Issued by Families USA, a Washington-based consumer health organization, the report said Missouri family health insurance premiums have risen 82.5 percent since 2000. During the same time, median earnings went up 22.8 percent.
The report said Missouri families are being priced out of health coverage.
"The combination of stagnant wages and rising health care costs is placing a growing strain on family budgets," it reads, "and many families have reached a breaking point."
Families USA, which favors health-care reform, used data from the federal Census Bureau, Department of Labor and Department of Health and Human Services in compiling the report.
