Monday was the last day to submit the paperwork for the vacant seat. Whomever is elected by the council will serve until next year's election. Thursday, the city council will have an open meeting to discuss a plan for filling former deputy mayor Mike Hirter's seat in the chamber.
Mayor Shearin knows it will be a challenging meeting as the council decides how to whittle the list down from 30.
The mayor says he wanted to keep the discussion open and not mandate how the council chooses the new member.
Once the council narrows the field, a simple majority is needed by the council to approve the new member.
