"‘4A" - James Moody
IPO Recordings Is Please To Announce The New CD From James Moody
by Alonzo Weston
Tuesday, August 25, 2009

(Pres release)

The most recent in IPO Recordings’ series of releases by James Moody, this new disc features legendary pianist Kenny Barron in a beautifully relaxed, swinging, classic session. Moody has never sounded better!

Whether James Moody is playing the soprano, alto or tenor saxophone, he does so with deep resonance and wit. This jazz great has a healthy respect for tradition, but takes delight in discovering new musical paths, which makes him one of the most consistently expressive and enduring figures in modern jazz today.

Kenny Barron’s unmatched ability to mesmerize audiences with his elegant playing, sensitive melodies, and infectious rhythms has made him one of the most respected pianists in modern jazz.

“As a musical explorer, performer, collaborator, and composer [Moody] has made an indeliable contribution to the rise of American music as the dominant musical force of the twentieth century.”

– NEW YORK TIMES

“[Kenny Barron is] one of the top jazz pianists in the world.” – LOS ANGELES TIMES

“If you’re looking for instrumental fireworks or can’t abide reflection in your jazz, you’ll find no delight here.

But if you value the wisdom of elders and the hard-worn grace of decades spent mastering the traditions

and nuances of the music, this CD is a joy.” – JAZZTIMES

“The most lyrical pianist of our time.” – JAZZ WEEKLY

“James Moody, of course, is best known for his long association with Dizzy Gillespie…[but he] still has plenty

of punch in his tenor-sax playing.” – MUSICWEB-INTERNATIONAL

Remember when it used to blow your mind that the geezers could make an album in an afternoon but Eagles, Fleetwood Mac and the rest would take a year and a half? The geezers are still leading the way. Well into his 80s, Moody shows he can still make an album in an afternoon. Not only that, his label let him do what he wants and he makes a great nu mainstream date that could take others to school. The only real ground breaking thing about this session is that it’s such great listening. Well played by everyone on board, this set will perk your ears up and keep them at attention. This is the kind of review that writes itself simply by stringing a bunch of superlatives together and letting the vocabulary to the rest. Hot stuff that mainstream jazzbos will champion. - CHRIS SPECTOR MIDWEST RECORD
