Road work roundup, Aug. 31, 2009

Weather permitting, the Missouri Department of Transportation will work with construction companies and maintenance employees this week on a number of roads in Northwest Missouri.

Some routes will be closed to traffic, and some will have the number of lanes reduced. Motorists are reminded to reduce their speeds and drive with caution in work zones. In addition to the roads listed below, numerous state routes in the area also are being patched, asphalted, oiled or receiving culvert replacements:

St. Joseph area - Beginning today, area maintenance crews will be doing concrete replacement work in various lanes on Missouri Route AC. The work will take place between Faraon Street and Missouri Route YY (Mitchell Avenue). Temporary signal lights will be set up to control traffic. Crews will be working between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. for four days.

Beginning Tuesday, the bridge on Missouri Route AC over U.S. Highway 36 in Buchanan County will have lanes narrowed. Area crews will perform deck repairs and will be working between 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. for three days.

Osborn - Herzog Contracting Corp. is resurfacing the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 36, starting at Osborn and running west to four miles west of Stewartsville. This project is expected to be completed by Sept. 3.

Brownville, Neb. - Work will begin on the Brownville Bridge on U.S. Highway 136 connecting Atchison County, Mo., and Nemaha County, Neb. The contract was awarded to Cramer & Associates Inc. of Grimes, Iowa, in the amount of $8.1 million and will begin Tuesday. The project will take two years. Improvements will include a new deck, new railing, repair of the substructure and new paint. As many as 12 weekend closures are anticipated. Beginning Sept. 8, the bridge will be narrowed to one lane with a width restriction of 8 feet, 6 inches. Temporary signals will be in place, and message boards will be installed on Interstate 29 to update drivers.
