Going back to Caliendo

'Frank TV' star is trading makeup for a mike

Frank Caliendo, the master of imitation comedy, spent Monday morning playing his Nintendo Wii and watching "The Wiggles" like a college student who didn't feel like going to his early lectures. "What else is an unemployed guy like me supposed to do?" he laughs.

TBS recently decided that it would not bring back "Frank TV" for another season. But that isn't putting a damper on his afternoon.

"You know what," he says, "I wouldn't have it any other way."

Sometimes a relaxing day at home is the remedy for the months of frenzy that preceded it. Making a national cable TV show like "Frank TV" required some 14-hour work days and extensive makeup sessions. The guy had to look like sports analysts such as Charles Barkley and John Madden, revered actors like Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino and former Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush. He even played the entire cast of "Seinfeld" in one sketch.

And then there was the relentless "Frank TV" ad campaign fueled by TBS and Dish Network. Anyone who watched an MLB playoff game in 2008 is fully aware of Frank Caliendo's Donald Trump impression, whether they want to be or not. Simply put, Caliendo and his multiple personalities were popping up everywhere.

"I have nothing but good things to say about TBS," Caliendo says. "They made me a pretty famous name - or an infamous name - however you want to look at it. But there was just so much me, me, me, me, me."

Despite earning an above-average rating, problems surfaced for "Frank TV" in its second season. For one, the cost of making the show overshadowed its ratings. Another problem was that Caliendo felt "Frank TV" needed a bigger cast to avoid dilution. Also, the show aired Tuesdays during the 10 p.m. time slot. Needless to say, barely anyone was watching "Frank TV" on the Tuesday night that President Obama was elected.

All of the parties involved eventually had to call it quits.

"I was very proud of the show and the network loved it," Caliendo says. "But now is the time to sit back and develop some new things."

Among those new things are possibilities with other networks, a new two-year deal with "The NFL on FOX" and a possible mini-bus tour.

But for now, Frank Caliendo is hitting the road and doing stand-up. He's even working on some new impressions. He's fine-tuning his Obama voice, right down to his "start slow, end fast" talking pace. He'll bring out some of his original favorites, too, such as Dr. Phil, Robin Williams and Adam Sandler. And the big two, of course.

"(John) Madden and (George W.) Bush are the ones that if I don't do them, I know people will be angry with me," he laughs.

Caliendo will perform at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 15 at the Uptown Theater in Kansas City. And if you think you've seen enough of him on TV, think again. Now that Caliendo isn't bogged down by the world of production, his stand-up is rejuvenated, fast-paced and as goofy as ever.

"Lately I've been on the stage going nuts," he says. "It seems like the less shows I do, the less it seems like work, the more fun I have."
