Central avenges loss to Lee's Summit North
by Ross Martin
Monday, January 5, 2009

Kaitlin Siela didn’t want to take the credit for her breakout game or the attention that comes with it.

Central’s junior reserve guard was just glad to help the team avenge an earlier loss to Lee’s Summit North.

Siela capped a hot first quarter for the Indians with a buzzer-beating 3-pointer, then added back-to-back treys during the third quarter to help put Lee’s Summit North away. Central’s 40-31 win Monday night at Central High School countered a five-point December loss to the Broncos at Lee’s Summit North High School.

“Oh, jeez,” said Siela, who tied for the team high with 10 points after going scoreless in the previous meeting. “I didn’t really think about (taking the shots), just lucky I guess. I don’t usually shoot that much.

“We were really upset about the last one. We really thought we should’ve had that one.”

Like in the previous meeting, Central (7-3) started fast against Lee’s Summit North.

Both teams committed six turnovers in the first quarter, but Lee’s Summit North (4-6) shot just 1-for-11 from the field. Broncos forward Annie Sayers — who put up 14 points in the Broncos’ 50-45 win last month — had all three of Lee’s Summit North’s first-quarter points but also picked up two early fouls.

With Sayers on the bench, Siela and starting forward Anissa DeMarr combined for all of the points in an 8-0 run to close the first quarter.

Siela capped the run, taking a pass on the right wing with 4.6 seconds left and knocking down an uncontested 3 to give Central a 14-3 lead entering the second. DeMarr had six of her 10 points during the first quarter.

Central didn’t match its first-quarter offensive output the rest of the way but didn’t let the lead slip away this time.

“When we played down there, we started out really, really strong, but we didn’t hit our shots,” Central coach Kevin Kelley said. “Tonight, we got the good lead, and we kept it.

“I felt like this was a big game for us and where we’re at right now.”

Lee’s Summit North held Central scoreless for the first 4:27 of the third quarter but managed only four points in that span to close within 22-17. Siela broke Central out of its funk with 3-pointers on back-to-back possessions to re-establish a double-digit lead and prompt Lee’s Summit North coach Tricia Lillygreen to call a timeout.

Siela didn’t score again, but the Broncos also came no closer than seven the rest of the way.

“Kaitlin always has a couple 3s here and there,” DeMarr said. “But this game she was amazing. She came off the bench ready, and she was in it. We were looking to get her the ball, and she was hot and ready to shoot.”

Sayers picked up her third foul before halftime and didn’t prove a major factor despite leading the Broncos with nine points.
