Eats: Geneo’s goes beyond pizza

Toasted club sandwich at Geneo’s Pizza and Pub

811 Francis St., 232-4000

Owners Shannan Jourdan and her husband, Geneo DeSpain, opened the restaurant/bar in 2006 and have expanded since then to the 8,000 square feet it is now.

Geneo says he wants this to be a destination place, where people can come on dates or with families or groups to eat pizza, drink beer, to play pool, air hockey or one of their many arcade and video games, watch one of their 10 flat-screen TVs and just have a good time.

Although the TVs, games and pool tables are new, the restaurant has that old-time atmosphere only a downtown building can provide: worn oak floors, high ceilings, architectural detail, etched mirrors and stained-glass windows. The good news is that unlike some downtown establishments, the new, remodeled bathrooms are a bragging point.

The menu is the same as when it opened: casual, Italian-style food like calzones, sub sandwiches and pizza. News-Press readers regularly recommend their calzones and toasted Italian sandwiches. They also offer beer and a full bar.

Pay attention to the time if you are under 21 years old. The restaurant’s hours are 11 a.m. to 9 p.m, and underagers are welcome to come play some pool and drink a pop with an adult at Sammy and Casey’s (the bar side) during those hours. But once the clock strikes 9, you must be 21.

Sammy and Casey’s stays open until 1:30 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. They are closed on Sundays. Call 232-4000 for carry-out and information on private rentals.
