Robot Chicken skating tour comes to KC

There aren't too many Emmy nominees that are going out and punching pro wrestlers like Cody Rhodes in the throat while simultaneously promoting their claymation show that has conquered the nerd universe and gained serious award recognition with its comic sci-fi comedy content and numerous celebrity cameos. In fact, there is only one.

"Robot Chicken" creator Seth Green (of "Austin Powers" and "Family Guy" fame among many productions) has been all over the tube publicizing the new "Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II" DVD. That included being the celebrity guest host of "WWE Monday Night Raw," a night that the longtime pro wrestling fan called the greatest in his life.

"I got to come out to my own superstar package which was Guns 'n Roses' "Welcome to the Jungle." What tops that?" Green asks. "Oh wait, Triple H and John Cena hoisting my hands in victory over their heads. That was pretty awesome, too."

In keeping with the randomness of his "Raw" appearance, Green conjured the Robot Chicken On Wheels Tour, a nine-city skating tour that reflects the attitude of his Adult Swim stop-animation show.

Green says he wanted to throw a free party for the show's fans and spread the word about the DVD. When he first came up with a roller skating party, he thought it was too silly. But he changed his tune after giving it deeper consideration.

"Roller skating is such a great equlaizer," Green says. "(Today,) you still have cool kids and I hope no one is too cool to get up on skates and have fun with us."

Yes, Green, co-creator Matthew Senreich and Breckin Meyer (who supplies many voices to the show) will be on skates as well. Green says he's a mediocre skater, but he only took one fall at the tour's first stop in San Diego. He blames the other 29 people in the chain.

"We were going fast and it was a whip and it was dangerous and it resulted in a huge tumble," Green laughs.

The skating tour will be making a stop at the River Roll Skate Center in Kansas City on Aug. 6. And for those who have two left feet or constantly cling to the wall while on wheels, there will be plenty of other activities available including photo booths, games, and a performance from Gym Class Heroes.

Green has known lead singer Travis McCoy for quite some time and said the band was a natural choice for the tour.

"When we were talking about a musically-sound band that is great for a party, Gym Class (Heroes) is a great, great band," he says. "And they know how to keep a room entertained."

Plus, the tour will benefit from all of Gym Class Heroes' connections. Other musicians who are friends with McCoy and the rest of the band have reached out to Green and could make some surprise appearances along the way.

"It'll probably be as random as 'Oh my gosh, T-Pain's on stage!'" Green admits. "We have no idea what's actually going to happen until it happens."

It's hard to believe that all this buzz is surrounding a "Robot Chicken: Star Wars" DVD. But to be fair, the episode is up for Emmy consideration as well as several other awards. Green doesn't think his show will win. He says he's humbled by the fact that people know "Robot Chicken" exists. If he wins an Emmy, however, Green says he'll throw modesty out the window.

"If I win (the Emmy), I'm gonna hang it from a rope chain and wear it to every precedent I go to for the next month. I'll show it off like Snoop Dogg-style, waving it and saying 'Look at my bling!'"

Doors for the Robot Chicken On Wheels Tour open at 8 p.m. Admission is free and depending on capacity, the one-in/one-out policy will be in effect. Those who have the "Robot Chicken: Star Wars Episode II" DVD can enter the rink at 7 p.m. with the voucher ticket found inside.
