Some months ago, we learned the updated long-range plan for Kansas City International Airport favors a single, large terminal rather than the three terminals that have been such a hit with area residents since the airport opened.
Now we understand KCI officials contend customer convenience is "our top goal."
Do you see a disconnect there? Whether you do or not, it's good news that U.S. Rep. Sam Graves, R-Tarkio, does.
Congressman Graves added a consumer provision to a House bill approved May 21 reauthorizing the Federal Aviation Administration. The language of the bill requires that customer convenience be considered when airports update their master plans every 10 years.
"We have a lot of folks out there that love the convenience of the Kansas City airport. That's one of the biggest things it's got going for it," Rep. Graves told The Kansas City Star.
The congressman admitted he doesn't know to what degree convenience was considered in the airport's plan, which by law must be updated every 10 years. Airport officials said they gave consideration to multiple variables, including how easily passengers changing planes in Kansas City are able to make their connections, and traffic issues, particularly for commuters from the south.
Regulators and the airport officials themselves, along with their oversight boards, will need to sort out the proper weighting for "customer convenience" criteria. We just know that two generations of Midland Empire air travelers have marveled at the ease of dropping off and picking up passengers; the short walks from the gates to baggage pickup, and then to catch a bus or cab; and the relatively short time spent in security lines.
A single-terminal approach - 15 more years into the future - might have lower operating costs and might simplify security measures. But any potential advantages from that design must be balanced against the new hassles and frustrations that could be placed upon the flying public.

I have been around the world in hundreds of airports over the past 25 years and I can easily say that there is NOT a more convenient airport in which to arrive and depart. I have always been amazed by the ease of checking in and out at MCI without having to traverse the whole airport. Many times I've changed carriers and found shuttle service readily available, easy to locate, and efficiently operated from one terminal to another.
Whoever came up with the "C" concept was a genius in airport design. Anyone who disagrees has never been in LaGuardia, Bangkok, Heathrow . . .

nana - Right you are but fear we will see much of the ease of using MCI gone if the proposed direction for change is adopted. Any questioning this need only go through a few of the the other airports taking an hour or more to get through security alone for a better understanding.

Why screw up a good thing?? It is the single easiest airport to fly out of. I have a hard time explaining to people in other cities the concept of not having to take trams, or walk 2 miles just to go through security.
The angle??(and there always is one) if they bunched all the terminals in one place...it triples the amount of traffic for food places, and shops etc...they want to make it more inconvienient for you to squeeze more money from you. They can't have you coming through the door and walking 10 steps to security and your gate...better you hike a mile past Subway, Burger King, and shops.
