The U.S. Air Guitar regional championship separates the rockers from the weak
Lots of people wish they could be rock stars but don’t have the musical talent it takes to get them there. For all those wannabe rockers, there is a way (and you don’t even need an instrument).
The U.S. Air Guitar regional championships will be at 10 p.m. June 9 at the Record Bar in Kansas City. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door. And while there won’t be any actual guitars, be prepared to be rocked.
“It’s everything you’d imagine a rock show to be,” says emcee and judge Dan Crane, aka Bjorn Torouqe, “with invisible guitars.”
The competition has two rounds. For the first round, competitors perform to a song of their choice. For the second, the top five perform to a surprise song. Each song is 60 seconds.
There are several factors that go into being a champion air guitarist. The most important, says reining U.S. and world champion Craig Billmeir, is a lack of humiliation.
“Ditch any and all shame, just go ... bonkers,” he says. “And have fun, obviously.”
An air guitar competitor also needs to bring his or her A game. Although it’s a somewhat silly “sport,” those fighting for the title take it very seriously.
“We’re often surprised by the lengths in which people will go to rock,” Crane says. “We’ve had a lot of injuries on the road.”
That includes a broken thumb and severed — yes, severed — toe.
And while costumes are highly encouraged, competitors should avoid making the “rookie mistake” of dressing like a known rock star.
“You’re trying to embody the rock star fantasy that you imagine in your mind,” says Crane. “... You want to come dressed as whatever rock star you’ve invented.”
If you don’t have what it takes to be an air guitar champion, you can still have plenty of fun as an audience member. Billmeier says the audience is a vital part of the show, as the emcee tries to turn the audience against the judges. If the audience doesn’t like what the judges say, they’re to let the judges know.
“As an audience member, you’re very much encouraged to be as vocal and participate as much as possible,” he says.
