Mustangs show some pluck, slip by Mudcats
by Travis Hartman
Friday, June 5, 2009

The famous San Diego Chicken generally steals the show with side-splitting antics as the mascot travels the country entertaining baseball fans. But he had some competition Friday night.

The St. Joseph Mustangs’ Kyle Wooden stole the show in front of 2,733 fans at Phil Welch Stadium by driving in the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs. Wooden and the Mascots defeated MINK League foe Chillicothe Mudcats 2-1.

After pitching a full game, Mustang Bill Disselhoff (1-0) sent his squad into the bottom of the ninth inning tied at one run apiece.

Greg Noble, hitting clean up for the Mustangs, poked a shot into shallow center field — placing the tying run on first base. Local athlete Johnny Coy dribbled one to first base and was unceremoniously thrown out for the second out of the inning.

That brought Wooden up. After Noble stole second base, Mudcats pitcher Tyler Minto tried jamming the lefty, Wooden, with a fast ball inside. But Wooden jumped on the inside fastball, sending it to deep right field and scoring Noble for the 2-1 victory.

“I have been struggling for the most part,” first basemen Wooden said. “It feels good to be able to come through for my teammates in a big conference game like this one.”

From the top of the fifth to the bottom of the seventh inning, the game seemed destined to go into extra innings as both teams went three-and-out with Disselhoff recording two of his four strikeouts in the top of the eighth inning.

The Mudcats (0-1) attempted to bunt their runners around the bases on several occasions.

But in the top of the sixth, Chillicothe’s Darian Sanford grounded out to shortstop, scoring Kyle Standridge after a one-hit inning where the Mustangs committed two errors.

“They played small ball very well, but (Disselhoff) kept his pitch count down,” said Mustangs manager Matt Johnson, whose club is 4-3 overall, 2-2 MINK. “(The Mudcats) have got to be the fastest overall team that I have seen yet.”

The Mustangs’ offense ran through Noble. He finished 2-for-4 with a stolen base while Wooden was responsible for driving in two.

“Greg Noble is seeing a beach ball at the plate right now, so I was not surprised with his hitting tonight.”

The late-inning victory preserved the Mustangs’ undefeated record at Phil Welch, which was nearly full for the entire game.

“It’s unbelievable to see so many people here to witness such a great game,” Mustangs owner Dan Gerson said.

2700 plus now that is a crowd that St Joseph can be proud of there needs to be 2000 there tonight with no promo. Sounds like a classic pitchers duel. I was at the hospital with a banged up son might make it tonight.

The stadium looked great last night! It was nice to see all the improvements that have been made. Phil Welch is now a much more enjoyable experience for everyone. To the concession stands and picnic areas down the 1st base line, to the kids playground down 3rd, Phil Welch can now be a great place to spend a summer evening with the family.

With the proper marketing that seems to be in place, there is no reason why attendance shouldn't be around 2,000 for every weekend game.

Does anyone know of a place one can find the MINK league standings? I can't find them in the News Press nor on the MINK league website.

I was at the game last night, so I am a bit confused about this article. Two days ago this paper reported the Mustangs with a record of 4-2, but after last night's win they have a record of 4-3?

Someone called into WHB 810 in Kansas City last week and said he brought his family up to a Mustangs game in St. Joe for the game last Friday. He said the fireworks display was better than any he had seen at Kauffman Stadium and that the entertainment level was much better. Kevin Keitzman has been complaining for weeks that the Royals don't have much to show for their $250 million renovation. Don't be surprised if more people make the 50 miles trek up to see the Stangs!

I believe the record should be 5-2, 2-2 in MINK play. In league games, the Mustangs split with Joplin, lost to Nevada, beat Chillicothe, so it's 2-2 in the league. They won three non-league games at home to open the season. I assume the writer intended Mustangs and not Mascots in reporting who won the game. I agree with comments about the stadium. It looks great, the food is good and the $2 beer draws a lot of interest. And the players hustle.

I'm old and often "mis-remember," but I believe Noble went to second on Johnny Coy's ground ball. He did not steal second.
