A new fast food option is now available on St. Joseph Avenue.
Chester’s opened Friday adjacent to the Fastgas convenience store at 1702 St. Joseph Ave. The fried chicken restaurant opens each day at 6 a.m. serving breakfast sandwiches and biscuits and gravy, said store manager Michael Payne.
Ron Bachman, owner of the seven Fastgas locations in St. Joseph, said he expects breakfast to be a natural fit for customers used to stopping at the convenience store for their morning coffee.
“If this works, we’ll bring it into our other locations,” Mr. Bachman said.
The main menu features Chester’s southern-recipe fried chicken, including bone-in chicken and chicken tenders.
“We don’t have anything pre-breaded. It’s all done fresh every day,” Mr. Payne said.
A full lineup of side dishes such as mashed potatoes and cole slaw complement the chicken, along with Chester’s signature sauces. The store has its own designated parking, but there is no dining room, so it’s all served “chicken to go,” Mr. Payne said.
Chester’s is open from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
Mr. Bachman is also building a car wash just north of the Fastgas location at Belt and Pickett.
“We’re trying to branch out into more than just gas and snacks,” he said.

What a disguise.
Looks like Heartland has yet another outlet for their used cats. :)
We'll give Chester's Chicken a try. Sure wish Popeye's would return to Saint Joseph tho, best flavored chicken ever!
*snicker @ thewiseone. Nice to see an occasional board contributor with a sense of humor warped as mine.
My God! St Joe is celebrating the opening of a fast food chicken joint while the Hoof and Horn is still in ashes?
What is WRONG with you people?
Nothing wrong with us, domicella. The Hoof has nothing to do with Chester's. Those are two totally different things. It does make me wonder the thought process that links the two. There has to be a certain disconnect of rationality.
......and the Hoof & Horn has reopened.
Hi domicella,
I am not sure that the opening of a new chicken restaurant is really dramatic enough for a "My God!" although I appreciate your enthusiasm.
If you think about it you can not compare Chester's Chicken to the Hoof & Horn, you are comparing apples to oranges. I am pretty sure that when someone goes to Chester's they are not expecting a Hoof & Horn dining experience and vice versus.
As far a something being wrong with "Us People" that may be a little unfair and disrespectful not to mention judgemental.
I personally recently tried Chester's Chicken and it is pretty good and I definitely agree that the Hoof & Horn is an excellent place to dine. With all of that being said please try not to be overly stressed about this issue...afterall it is only food and everyone deserves their choice.
This is all we need another place to get fat.....
dhockaday- if you find offense in the above comment then I apologize, I don't mean to offend anyone especially the mother hen of on-line comments.
Finally cam out of that pesky coma huh? Hoof has been opened up for over a month! And I doubt if you can buy a Beer at Hoof for what you can have a FULL meal at Chesters!
Besides Ron Bachman has done MUCH for St. Joseph so Don't Knock it !!!!!
