OREGON, Mo. - Large hail caused extensive damage in parts of Daviess and Holt counties Sunday night.

A dispatcher with the Daviess County Sheriff's Department said damage reports were still being compiled after grapefruit-sized hail pounded the Lake Viking area west of Gallatin, Mo.

Meanwhile, golfball-sized and larger hail hit Gallatin itself. No other information on the Daviess County storms was available Sunday night.

Elsewhere, Holt County Sheriff Scott Wedlock said vehicles bore the brunt of the storm, especially in the Oregon, Mo., area.

"Windshields and back windows seem to be the most prevalent," he said. "I would say it was fairly widespread" in Oregon, he added.

Some vehicles traveling along Interstate 29 in the county also displayed damage from the strong storm, Mr. Wedlock said.

Heavy rain and high winds also hit the county, and some tree branches fell, he said, but Oregon's utility services were unaffected. Scattered power outages were reported in rural parts of the county. No injuries were reported, Mr. Wedlock said.

Law enforcement officials reported brief heavy rains in Chillicothe and Worth County. The DeKalb Count Sheriff's Department reported golfball- and quarter-sized hail, but no damage was reported.

Brief funnel clouds were reported in the county - an eighth of a mile east of Missouri Route J on U.S. Highway 36 and another, rain-wrapped funnel toward Weatherby, Mo. However, the sheriff's office reported no tornado touchdowns in either case.

The Grundy County Sheriff's Department reported hail in Spickard, Mo., and in Leisure Lake, northwest of Trenton, Mo.

National Weather Service meteorologist Andy Bailey said the storms began forming Sunday in Northeast Kansas and Southeast Nebraska, after "explosive air" evolved into supercell thunderstorms that raced southeast.

The forecast calls for another chance of thunderstorms Tuesday night into Wednesday night, Mr. Bailey said.
