Local Peace Corps Volunteer Seeks Hometown Help

Cristin Smith is a lot like others from St. Joseph. She went to St. Francis Xavier School, and graduated from Bishop LeBlond High School. She went on to higher education, and started looking for a job in Kansas City. But that was just the beginning.

Instead of getting a high-dollar, high-power business job, Ms. Smith decided to use her degree and life experience to try to make the world better for others. That's what she says took her to the Peace Corps, and to Suriname in South America. It's there that she's trying make a difference for about 300 villagers who have no access to clean drinking water. Her project aims to raise about $12,000 to assist the villagers in purchasing and setting up Durotanks, or large "catchment" tanks, that catch and store rainwater for drinking. Right now, the villagers must use a nearby river for all of their water needs, including toilet facilities.
