Mowing accident topples radio tower
by St. Joseph News-Press
Wednesday, June 17, 2009

A radio tower in Andrew County was downed Tuesday evening after a farmer accidentally snagged one of its connecting wires.

Mark Vail, vice president of Eagle Radio in Hays, Kan., said at about 7:10 p.m., a farmer mowing hay around the tower caught one of the wires holding it, causing it to fall.

The tower, one of four that transmits for AM talk radio station KFEQ, was located close to U.S. Highway 71. Mr. Vail said the farmer was the only person at the scene and was not injured.

Mr. Vail said KFEQ will be sending an emergency request authorization to the FCC to operate at reduced power. The station’s daytime reception should not be affected, he said, but its nighttime signal would.
