Stand-up comic Alex Reymundo is returning to St. Joe — and he’s bringing a Comedy Central crew with him.
The Latino comedian who opened for Blue Collar Comedy Tour headliner Ron White during his two sold-out shows at the Missouri Theater back in October has decided to film his latest Comedy Central special in St. Joseph. The event will be at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at the Missouri Theater.
Mr. Reymundo is most well-known as Ron White’s go-to opening act and one of the headliners of the 2002 stand-up comedy film “The Original Latin Kings of Comedy,” alongside Cheech Marin, George Lopez, Joey Medina and Paul Rodriguez.
The Comedy Central special will be his second one-hour feature, following 2007’s “Alex Reymundo Hick-Spanic: Live in Alburquerque.”
When asked why he chose St. Joseph as the location for his special, Mr. Reymundo spoke of the warm reception he received from crowds in the Midwest.
“I know when I feel best is when I’m in the middle of the country, talking to real people,” he said.
And Mr. Reymundo also feels it’s a chance to bridge the gap between his Hispanic and white fan bases.
“I think blue-collar folk and hillbillies are just Latinos with a tanning problem,” he joked. “I feel like I can speak to middle America and the Latinos of America, all in the same room.”
The event will be presented by Robidoux Resident Theatre. Jeff Haney, business manager for RRT, said the production will cost $300,000, most of which is coming from Mr. Reymundo’s own pocket. The money will help bring a Hollywood production team to St. Joe to build a set on stage and operate five cranes throughout the Missouri Theater, holding cameras to get shots of Mr. Reymundo and the crowd.
But Mr. Haney said there are also local volunteers who plan to lend their skills to making the show go off without a hitch.
“We have lots of people who would be more than willing to work on this project,” he said.
Mr. Haney said being a part of a Comedy Central taping will be the big draw for audiences, but he also points out that with modest ticket prices — ranging from $10 to $25 — and the great impression Mr. Reymundo made during his last St. Joe performances, it won’t be the only reason people show up.
“In a lot of people’s minds, he was as good as the (headlining) act itself,” he said.
And with St. Joe attracting productions of this stature, Mr. Haney is hopeful it could lead to the city getting more attention from national touring acts down the road.
Tickets for Alex Reymundo’s performance go on sale Wednesday, and will be sold on a first-come, first-served basis. For more information or to purchase tickets, contact RRT at 232-1778 or go online to www.rrtstjoe.org or www.jomotickets.com.
