For those of you who are even slightly interested in filmmaking, acting, directing, or simply watching independent film, there's an event in Kansas City you shouldn't miss this weekend.

The Independent Filmmakers Coalition of Kansas City (IFCKC) will hold thits ninth annual “One Night Stand” on Saturday, June 20. While many cities around the nation now hold similar events, the IFCKC’s “One Night Stand” was the first of its kind and is the only film contest that challenges teams to write, shoot, edit and screen a short film in just ten hours.

Filmmakers from all over Missouri and Kansas will meet at the Just Off Broadway Theatre for registration beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday morning. At 9:30, a theme, an object, and a line of dialogue from a famous movie will all be drawn at random. From there, the teams must work all three into their films.

After a furious ten hours of shooting and editing, the films must be turned into the IFCKC by 7:30 pm at the Just Off Broadway Theatre. Around 8 p.m., the films will be screened and judged by delegates from the film and television industry. Three Judges Awards will be selected, along with a Captain’s Award, chosen by all the team leaders, as well as the Audience Choice Award.

“One Night Stand” is open to anyone who has an interest in acting or filmmaking. Many teams form ahead of time, but newcomers are encouraged to show up at the drawing and volunteer their skills. Entry is $25 per team and each team will receive two tickets to the screening that night.

“One Night Stand” draws about 25 to 35 teams each year. The film’s length is usually between three and six minutes depending on the number of entries.

Movie lovers and fans of independent film are encouraged to attend the screening. Tickets are $5 at the door for IFCKC members and $8 for non-members.
