Selection of Contractor Causes Concern
by Sarah Lawson
Tuesday, June 23, 2009

News of the contractor chosen to build Missouri Western State University's new sport and recreation facility has some local union workers concerned.

Western Officials chose Crossland Construction, a Kansas company, to be the contractor for the project. The company will construct the $10 million facility that will also be the summer training camp home of the Kansas City Chiefs.

Tuesday, local union leaders met for their monthly meeting at the IBEW Electrical Workers local 545. There are nearly 1,200 tradesmen in the area. Business agents are elected from the hundreds of tradesmen to attend union meetings.

Greg Logan, Business Manager for IBEW, said the union is worried Crossland will chose out of town workers rather than local tradesmen. He says local workers need to and should do the job. Mr. Logan also says since they are tax payers, they should get the nod if it's anywhere within reason and close on cost. He adds, the lowest price isn't always the best. Mr. Logan says he has yet to hear what companies were awarded the jobs.

Dan Nicoson, from Missouri Western, says officials with Crossland Construction indicated they were going to use 6 local subcontractors for the project, however, a list of that hasn't been made public yet.

Crossland is expected to begin construction facility July first.
