MARYVILLE, Mo. — Nodaway County health officials are reminding folks to talk to their doctor if they are sick, as a recent visitor to Maryville has been diagnosed with the H1N1 flu, or swine flu.

Della Roades from the Nodaway County Health Department said an area resident went to the doctor with an illness and told the doctor that they had contact with someone no longer in the country who was later diagnosed with the virus. The resident, however, tested negative for the virus.

Northwest Missouri State University officials notified the campus community Friday that an individual who had interaction with campus and community members did test positive.

“While most cases of H1N1 to date have been relatively mild, we want to remind everyone of the previously issued standard guidelines,” said a university campus alert, which went on to remind folks to wash their hands frequently, stay home from work or school if ill, and to contact a doctor.

In Buchanan County, an infant boy under 6 months was treated at Heartland Regional Medical Center’s emergency room over the weekend for a confirmed case of H1N1. A full recovery is expected.

Health officials said the swine flu should not cause panic but should illustrate the need to remain vigilant against a disease that has spread to more than 70 countries. Health department officials recommend regular hand-washing, covering the nose or mouth with a tissue when coughing, and staying home from work or other activities if flu-like symptoms occur.
