Subcontractors selected for project Chiefs’ facility
11 local firms to help build
by Jimmy Myers
Saturday, June 27, 2009

Eleven local subcontractors will help build the Kansas City Chiefs’ summer training facility at Missouri Western State University.

Western released a list of subcontractors Friday that shows local companies will account for just under half of the $10.29 million project.

St. Joseph Plumbing-Heating-Cooling and Hausman Metal Works and Roofing contracted for $1.5 million and $1 million, respectively.

Other locals include Edson R. Marsh Construction Inc. (masonry), $564,106; Herzog Contracting Corp. (asphalt), $433,006; Herner Construction (gyp board/framing), $335,399; Eckard’s Carpet, $307,002; Northwest Doors (doors, hardware, overhead doors), $229,484; Wesley’s Glass, $140,713; Varco-Pruden Buildings (metal storage building), $30,000; Pine Valley Contracting Inc. (landscape plantings), $15,866; and Roderick Sign Co., amount not listed.

In addition, concrete for the project will most likely be bought locally, according to a Western news release.

Dan Nicoson, vice president of university advancement, said previous speculation had about six local subcontractors working with the general contractor, Crossland Construction, based out of Columbus, Kan.

“We’ve been encouraging them all along to use as many locals as they could,” he said, adding that the choice was always in Crossland’s hands.

The other $5.6 million in construction will be carried out by nine non-local subcontractors.

Construction and union officials representing local workers expressed concern this week about the use of out-of-town labor. Greg Logan, president of the St. Joseph Building and Construction Trades, was vocal this week in his support for local tradesmen.

“If some of them changed because of what we did, great,” he said of the addition of five more local subcontractors than what was originally thought to be included in the project.

i know some of the local contractors myself. and if there is one thing that will be said about the local workers is that they always do the best they can. they are paid an honest wadge and they do the best they can. (and i am a union supporter) i am no longer union due to retirement but i can tell you there is pride in everything they touch. and you have my word on that.
