Mound City boys take down South Holt
by Rick Dunaway
Saturday, March 7, 2009

ROSENDALE, Mo. — Mound City’s Cole Rosier drained a jump shot from the left wing Friday night, salvaging a 52-50 victory over South Holt in the championship game of the Class 1 District 14 basketball tournament.

Rosier’s bucket and the ensuing buzzer touched off a wild celebration, but that celebration was a bit premature. Officials huddled and determined that 1.9 seconds needed to be put back on the clock.

And although South Holt did it’s best, Toby Prussman’s three-quarter court shot bounced off the front of the rim, giving the Panthers a sectional date Tuesday at Missouri Western against the winner of District 13.

“That was a big shot,” said Mound City coach Korey Miles, who opted not to take a timeout with 10 seconds remaining to set up a strategy session.

“A lot of coaches would call a timeout in that situation, but we’ve got a lot of athletes and they know what to do. I think, I’m not going to call it; I’m going to let them play it through. Cole came up and made a big play. That was a nice shot.”

“Time was running down, and I had to shoot it, so I threw it up there, and thank God it went in,” Rosier said. “We were all kind of scrambling at that time.”

Although the Panthers had led much of the game, they weren’t without adversity. In early foul trouble, Miles was unable to substitute freely, and it showed. Although Mound City took a 14-9 first-quarter lead on a balanced scoring attack, South Holt had scrambled back to take the lead by intermission.

“We kind of wore down,” Miles said. “We played really good, but the last couple of minutes (of the half) we kind of wore down and gave up some easy shots.”

South Holt led by as many as eight points in the second half, but a two-pointer from the top of the key by Gage Rosier put Mound City back on top, 42-41, and the lead changed hands four times after that.

South Holt led by two possessions as late as the 54-second mark, but Patrick Treece and Miles Clifton scored layups in a 20-second span to tie it up.

“We just couldn’t seal it up there in the last 40 seconds,” South Holt coach Colby Morris said. “I thought we played pretty good defense all night, but we just couldn’t finish it.”

Mound City’s Miles Clifton led all scorers with 19 points, and got 11 points in support from Treece.

Prussman led a three-pronged South Holt attack with 16 points. Cameron Radley added 13, and John Plummer tallied 11.
