ROSENDALE, Mo. — The bond between sisters — especially twin sisters — can overcome almost anything.

With her sibling Sami in tears at the start of the game, scratched from the starting lineup with a sprained ankle, Lindsi Jackson scored 17 points Friday night to rally South Nodaway to a 40-35 victory against Mound City.

Lindsi Jackson, a 5-foot-9 senior forward, scored 13 of her game-high total in the second half as the Longhorns (27-1) overcame a five-point first-half deficit and set up a date Tuesday in the sectional round at Missouri Western. South Nodaway plays the winner of District 13.

After a sluggish 4-4 first quarter, Mound City (19-9) took charge on 3-pointers by Synthia Murphy and Jenny Jackson wrapped around a free throw by Laura Schoonover. The Panthers led by as many as five points in the second quarter, but the Longhorns drew within a bucket, 15-13, at intermission.

After Mound City pushed the lead back up to five in the early stages of the second half, Lindsi Jackson went to work. Two fast-break pull-up jumpers and a falling-down runner at the buzzer left the Longhorns within a point, 27-26, at the end of the third quarter.

“We knew, not having Sami, we’d have to make a lot of changes in the second half,” Lindsi Jackson said. “We had to drive a lot more, take it into the paint and force the ball around more.”

South Nodaway coach Shawn Emerson said his team didn’t push the ball much early, but he knew that had to change.

“The first half we didn’t really push the ball, and that’s because Sami’s out,” he said. “But Lindsi did a great job pushing the ball. We kind of put the game on Lindsi’s shoulders.”

During one stretch ending the third quarter and opening the fourth, Lindsi Jackson scored three straight buckets and two free throws in an 11-2 run that converted a 27-24 deficit into 35-29 advantage with 4 minutes, 15 seconds remaining. The Longhorns pushed the margin to as many as seven points.

Although the top-seeded Longhorns missed a lot of free throws late, the third-seeded Panthers lost their shooting touch down the stretch, getting only three buckets in the final 9:12.

Kallie Schoonover led Mound City’s attack with 14 points, including two of the team’s five 3-pointers.

This was the second time this season South Nodaway has defeated the Panthers in a close game. The Longhorns won 35-31 at Mound City of Feb. 10.
