Britney Spears can't - and doesn't - sing!
So why is her tour selling out?
by Lacey Storer
Tuesday, March 10, 2009

Britney Spears kicked off her “Circus” tour this past weekend, and, needless to say, the show is a spectacle. Reviews are mostly positive : It seems Brit is back on the top of her game.

I feel I should point out, however, that the top of her game does not include actual singing. That’s right, while Brit is dancing and strutting on stage, in front of thousands of fans who paid hundreds of dollars to see her, she’s not actual singing. She’s lip-synchs the entire time.

Perez Hilton, in his glowing review of the show, acknowledged that Britney didn’t sing the entire time, but gives her a pass saying “It’s Britney, what did you expect?”

I’m sorry, but what?! Is it really too much to expect that pop stars are actually able to sing? When did it become just completely acceptable for “singers” to not actually have to sing?

And yes, I know that using backup vocals or pre-recorded tracks is common at big events, like Jennifer Hudson at the Superbowl or Beyonce at the Oscars. But there’s a difference between something that is being televised to millions of people who are watching it free on TV and something that is seen by thousands who paid - PAID - for the real thing.

I’ve never been a big fan of Britney, and this only confirms that I was right in my decision. It’s ridiculous that someone with so little actual talent can be so famous. If all she can do is dance and look good half-naked, then put her in the back with the rest of the backup dancers and let the real artists take front stage.

I couldn't disagree with you more. People want to go see Britney PERFORM, which includes way more than just singing. Britney made it clear EARLY in her career that is interested in putting on a spectacle more than the quality of her voice. All of Britney's concerts involve heavy dance routines. Even the most skilled of performers couldn't dance like she does and still sing, while not sounding or acting out of breath. Can you have a decent conversation while you're at your aerobics class?

People are way more interested in the experience of the show than if she's really singing. Ask yourself, do you think the concert would be as exciting if she were perched on a stool all night, so she could actually belt the notes out herself?

I should note that I think Britney is a trainwreck, and I also think that is precisely the reason that a lot will attend this tour. It seems to me, though, that you're new to the entertainment industry and still a little green when it comes to how live entertainment works.

If Madonna can sing live and dance all over the place (and she's 50!) then Britney should be doing her songs live, too.

Madonna does not in fact always sing live. And her dance routines don't involve as much running around as Britney. Still, if you've been to a Madonna concert, you can hear her breathing heavy during and between songs.

Personally I think Britney does a good job, So she has had some problems, but isn't she human like everyone else,I think there are alot people that are just jealous of her. If you don't like her then don't watch or listen to her.

I can't believe how many people are coming to Britney Spears' defense. Why? Do you people really think she's a gifted artist? Do you feel that sorry for her? I guess people are free to throw away their money on whatever they want, but don't confuse popularity or showmanship with talent. There's a big difference.

wood_unl:

I'm not coming to her defense. I'm simply implying the the author of the column is uneducated in how the entertainment business works.

I never said she's a gifted artist, but at one time she was a gifted performer. I never said I felt sorry for her either.

And you're right, people shouldn't confuse talent with showmanship, but going to a show with a talented artist that isn't much of a showman isn't such a good idea either.

I get the feeling that Lacey nor wood_unl have ever seen Ms. Spears perform live. I have, many times, but never as a patron. Some people put on good shows, and some people don't. Whether or not they lip synch is rarely a contributing factor to how good the show is.

Again, I freely admit that Britney is a trainwreck and that I don't care for her music. That being said, she (usually) puts on a fantastic show. Again, let's not confuse singing with performing.
