In an otherwise non-descript game, I witnessed my first ever crime-related delay during a high school event.
Action stopped Wednesday at Hyde Park No. 6 for about 10 minutes while arrests were being made in a neighborhood just blocks away. I’m always prepared to see something new when I go to events, but this certainly was an unexpected first.
During the game, Central again showed its flashes of talent with a young lineup that included three freshman and only two seniors. One shining bright spot came from sophomore catcher Tyler Arthur during the fourth inning.
In consecutive at-bats, Arthur caught Lee’s Summit runners stealing at second base with pinpoint throws.
Dave Gerke walked, but Arthur immediately turned him into an out with a one-hop throw to shortstop Ethan Boyer on the first pitch of Jake Friedmeyer’s at-bat. Friedmeyer eventually singled but was also thrown out after trying to steal as Austin Welch took a pitch after squaring to bunt.
The two outs saved Central from allowing Lee’s Summit to extend on its 4-0 lead.
The Tigers had two hits and two walks in the inning, eventually stranding runners at first and second. Central ultimately couldn’t find the offense to overcome its early hole after the Indians committed three of their four errors in the second inning to allow Lee’s Summit four unearned runs.
But Arthur’s back-to-back caught-stealing throws allowed Central to stay in it until Jonathan McCann grounded into the game-ending double play.
