The state of Missouri has filed criminal charges against the former owner of a Gallatin, Mo., grain dealership, alleging he stole from numerous farmers.
The charges were filed April 29 in Daviess County Associate Circuit Court against Daniel F. Froman, who once owned the Gallatin Grain Co. A total of 22 counts of felony stealing grain and three counts of felony filing of false financial statements have been filed in the case.
Mr. Froman posted a $100,000 cash bond Friday after his arrest, with a May 22 arraignment scheduled. His bond conditions include supervision by the county’s court services office through an electronic monitor. Mr. Froman must also submit — upon court or law enforcement request — to alcohol or drug testing.
In early March, the Missouri Department of Agriculture took claims from more than 100 farmers at the company’s closing. Mr. Froman surrendered his grain dealer’s license and closed the elevator Feb. 9 due to an inability to pay debts which state officials say amount to nearly $700,000.
Farmers will learn how much of their lost money they can recover during a May 28 hearing at Gallatin High School.
The state also has filed a lawsuit against Mr. Froman that alleges violations of Missouri’s clean water laws at the Gallatin Livestock Market.
