As spring turns into summer and cold days become a distant memory, it’s natural that more people want to spend time outdoors. For those looking to participate in some organized activities outside, there are a multitude of summer leagues available.

Adult volleyball

For the past 22 years, people have spent their springs and summers hitting the sand at Volley’s. The spring season is in progress, but the summer volleyball season will start on July 6. Registration will start toward the end of May.

There are three types of teams — men’s, women’s and coed — and three categories within those teams — recreational, intermediate and power. Recreational is for anybody who wants to play, says manager Denise Hector. Intermediate is for those who are a bit more advanced.

“Intermediate, you don’t want to be ultra competitive, but you know how to play volleyball, you want to play right,” she says.

And power is for those who really know what they’re doing. Registration is $200 per team. Teams can have anywhere from six to 12 players listed on their roster. And, Mrs. Hector says, there’s no age limit.

“A lot of parents have their kids play with them,” she says.

Games are played Monday through Friday, with a rotating schedule from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. For more information, call Volley’s at 233-7376.

Youth and adult softball and baseball

While the Parks, Recreation and Civic Facilities Department’s spring/summer softball and baseball leagues are already under way, you can start planning ahead for the fall league. The fall season runs from August to October, says Mike Halloran, senior recreation supervisor.

Washer leagues

Washers isn’t just for tailgating at football games. To break in its new patio deck, Pop’s Place is hosting a summer washers league through June. Although registration technically ended on Wednesday, owner Steve Holland says teams can still sign up for the next couple of weeks.

“We won’t have a problem the first couple of weeks getting people signed up,” he says. “They just have to throw a couple make-up games, it’s not big deal.”

Registration fees for the four-person teams are $4 per person per week. There’s a payback at the end of the season, Mr. Holland says, with the amount based on the number of wins your team has.

For those who don’t have time to join a league, Mr. Holland says people can go and play washers on their own during the week.

Legend’s Sports Bar & Grill also is offering a washers league this summer. Signups start next Monday and will be open for two weeks. The leagues will play a five-week season, with four weeks of regular play and then a tournament.

“Last year they did 10 weeks and a tournament,” says organizer Derrick Gillispie. “... As much as people did have fun, it seemed like maybe a little too long before the tournament.”

Each team can have four members, with two people playing at a time. There will be a registration fee, though the amount is undecided. Like Pop’s Place, Legend’s is offering cash prizes at the end of the season, as well as other giveaways.
