Police Enforce Seatbelt Law
by Rachel Hoffman
Monday, May 18, 2009

Monday marked the start of the national "Click It or Ticket" campaign, a reminder to drivers to buckle up.

The Saint Joseph Police Department along with other Missouri Law Enforcement agencies will be participating in the seatbelt campaign. A recent effort to pass a primary seat belt law in Missouri failed in the general assembly this session. This means traffic officers must see some other violation in order to pull over a vehicle besides not wearing their seatbelt.

However, child restraint violations, meaning anyone under the age of sixteen not wearing a seat belt, are considered a primary violation and will get you pulled over.

Sargent Bill McCammon, Traffic Unit Supervisor for the Saint Joseph Police Department, says it can be frustrating not being able to enforce the seat belt law at will.

The click it or ticket campaign will continue until May 31st.
