Opinions favor leaving detainees at Gitmo
by Ray Scherer
Monday, May 25, 2009

A random survey of local and area residents shows sentiment running against President Obama’s plan to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay by January.

All five people interviewed by the News-Press on Sunday said moving terrorism suspects from the facility to the United States would be wrong. Mr. Obama has said it would be feasible to transfer the detainees to maximum-security prisons in the U.S. and is working on details of the process. Among prisons mentioned as potential sites for the suspects is the U.S. Disciplinary Barracks at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., about 60 miles south of St. Joseph.

Mr. Obama also has said that continuing to keep the detainees at the site serves as a cause for U.S. enemies.

St. Joseph resident Judy McKinney called the president’s plan a waste of money that would be better spent on domestic services that help residents.

“I think that’s the worst mistake he could ever make,” Ms. McKinney said. “It’s just going to be (resulting in) more terrorism.”

Trina Nading of St. Joseph agreed.

“Keep them over there,” she said. “We’ve got enough people over here. We don’t want them.”

Bill Burnich also holds a not-in-my-backyard appraisal of the situation and believes other motives are at work.

“I think it’s all a political maneuvering,” the St. Joseph man said. “I don’t think there’s any problem (with keeping it open). I don’t want them in my country.”

Safety is a predominant concern for Ashley Medsker, who also lives in St. Joseph.

“I’d rather they weren’t in the continental U.S.,” she said of the detainees. “It makes a target over our heads, I think.”

Mark Pierce of Blue Springs sees Mr. Obama as rushing into resolving the matter.

“I don’t think it’s a wise idea, personally,” he said. “There’s a reason why our government put them there. I think there needs to be more of a thought process to it.”

It is a hopeful sign for the future to see the average Midland Empire Joe or Jane exhibit more concern for our country's national defense than all the liberal egg yolk heads in The Obama's white House "brain trust."

Today, the North Koreans fired off another successful atomic weapon test. They are on the way to developing a three-stage intercontinental delivery system.

Last week, Iran successfully tested a solid fuel rocket with a range of 1,200 miles, a range extending to Israel and southern Europe.

Which defense program is our genius leader cutting out of the military budget? You got it! The proven effective missile defense shield.

Liberals are dangerous to your health.

I am not saying I agree with Obama's plan to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay but I do disagree with the author of this article.

He states a "random survey" in one sentence and then refers to "all five people" interviewed for the article. A random survey is not constituted by interviewing five people. Were these five people all sitting at the same table eating supper? Riding in the same vehicle? How do we know they weren't all together which means they may be more likely to share the same ideology?

With the city of St Joe's population of around 74,000, at least 425 would need to be randomly surveyed to get a 90% confidence or accuracy level with a 4% error margin... or around 600 surveyed for 95% accuracy level with a 4% error margin... or 1025 for 99% accuracy level with a 4% error margin.

The article would imply to those who are less likely to make decisions on their own but choose to follow the ideology of others that 100% of all St. Joe residents and visitors are against closing Guantanamo Bay. Even in a perfect world, 100% of the people in a city are not going to agree!

It would be interesting to know exactly how many the author actually surveyed... to see if it truly is a random survey, proving or disproving the accuracy of the article.

It is not a matter who Leavenworth has held in the past, it is a issue for one these are not american citizens and they do not deserve the legal process that is afforded to all american citizens innocent till proven guilty, these terroist have been proven to be just that and they need to stay where they are and not on US soil anywhere. How fast do some forget what these people did to us on 9/11 and how many american lives they took that day. Do you really want these people in the US courts and found possibly not guilty and released in your community to plan more attacks on us. I do not leave them where they are and our elected officials have listened to us so far I hope they do not give in.

I hope the five people that took part in the survey and everyone else that is opposed to having terrorist run free in their neighborhood/the United States will take the time to contact their elected officials in DC and let them know how they feel about this. No one has escaped from Gitmo since it opened, there is no need for change.

God Bless America, God Save The Republic.

I watched a documentary on the subject of these detainees this morning. One thing it stated is that only 7% of those captured where apperhended by coalition forces. The other 93% where turned in by either pakistani forces,or afgahn tribal leaders. One example given, was a tribal warlord turning in his neighbor for a bounty, then taking over the mans farm and doubling his opiate production. The backbone of any successful military operation is solid intelligence, not greed or tribal vendettas.I think its all relative to the fact of the Bush administrations' failure to catch or kill bin laden. The bureau of prisons is totally capable of handling these detainees.Once more spreading them out could cripple future terrorist operations,by simply cutting off thier communication with each other.

I don't think interviewing five dirt legs count as much of a poll.

We call them "detainees" but they are better thought of as prisoners of war....except the war is on terrorism, not a country, and it was an undeclared war, not a legal one. The problem is that we have no idea how to manage such a situation and holding people against their will and without a trial is the same thing as a Soviet gulag. We have always been alarmed by a government system that allows people to be declared "enemies of the state" and incarcerated without recourse to the law....and now we are doing it. The sin of it is that our citizenry apparently wants to hide the problem from sight and pretend that it will go away, as soon as all those inconvenient people die. Unless we purge them, that will be a long, long time. Not only have they become heroes in the Middle Eastern anti-US cultures, but they further stand for what a misguided and over-zealous, unapologetic, corrupt Presidency can get by with. Deciding what to do about Gitmo is the least of our problems. And deciding what the right thing to do with all these prisoners of war won't really deal with the REAL problems we have to face. And the biggest problem of all is the ignorance and complacency of our citizens, all of whom should be sharing the shame of this predicament and not ignoring it and pretending it away!!!!!!!!

Why should we spend 80,000,000 to move prisioners anywhere.

The facility is well located....it is a magnificant prison and we already squandered over $200,000,000 to be certain it accomodates muslims much better than they ever lived before.

The other terrorists could care less about our politically correct foolishness.

Can't a politician worry about tax dollars sometime.
