DeKalb youth raise funds

Members of Lutron Ministries, the new name for the DeKalb Christian Church youth group, will hold a series of fundraisers in June to help defray the cost of its trip to CIY in Omaha, Neb.

On June 6, the group will host a spaghetti supper and movie night. Dinner will be served at 7 p.m., followed by the movie — “One Night with the King,” the story of Queen Esther — beginning at 8 p.m.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 13, Schwan Fine Foods will have a sale of its frozen products in the church parking lot. A percentage of the sales will go to the youth. Those interested are encouraged to call the church at 685-3233 with an order to be picked up that day; however, sales will also be made June 13 on a first-come, first-served basis.

On June 20, the church will be having a pre-Father’s Day picnic at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Mark Pierce. An auction will be held with the young people offering themselves for two-hour blocks of work.

Upward registration

McCarthy Baptist Church, 2710 S. Belt Highway, is accepting registrations for Upward basketball and cheerleading. The program teaches the fundamentals of basketball and cheerleading with an emphasis on fair play, sportsmanship and a Christ-like attitude. All children receive equal playing time and participate in weekly devotions during practice. The program is for children who will be in first through sixth grades this fall.

Registration forms may be picked up at the church office, The early registration cost per child for either basketball or cheerleading is $60; after July 12, the cost is $70. The deadline for registration is July 18. Basketball shorts or cheerleading mock turtlenecks are included in the registration cost.

Practices begin on Aug. 10, and the first game will be Sept. 5. For more information, contact Mike Wacker, Upward director, at 390-5988, or call the church office at 279-2432.

Sister on core team committee

Benedictine Sister of Perpetual Adoration Rita Clair Dohn, OSB, was elected to the Core Team Committee of the American Benedictine Formation Conference during its symposium in April at Our Lady of Grace in Beech Grove, Ind.

The Core Team consists of five people elected at the biennial ABFC symposium, according to the ABFC Web site. Members are responsible for organizing the symposium, coordinating staff and logistics for other ABFC sponsored programs, determining scholarship amounts and financial assistance dispersal and attending to the needs and requests of members.

She is the Congregation’s formation director and also serves as the manager of the altar bread department.

Benedictines have new position

General Councilor Sister Dawn Annette Mills, OSB, has assumed additional duties as director of development for the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration.

During this spring’s Extended Council, which included representatives of the congregation and each of the three communities, it was decided that the Sisters should establish the position to assist with major development opportunities and to explore avenues of fundraising.

Sister Mills, who was elected as a councilor during last summer’s General Chapter, also heads the Clyde correspondence department, a position she feels has helped prepare her for her new role as development director and in forging new relationships.

She has spearheaded the Clyde correspondence department since 2004. Under her direction, the department developed an e-mail correspondence division. Sister Mills also travels extensively, conducting retreats and workshops and providing spiritual direction on various subjects.
