Levy supporters stemmed the losses
by St. Joseph News-Press
Wednesday, November 4, 2009

St. Joseph school levy supporters learned that, sometimes, less is more.

Support for the school levy, which passed with 56 percent of the vote Tuesday, did not drop off significantly compared to April’s election. The St. Joseph School District levy finished with 8,952 “yes” votes Tuesday, which is actually 50 fewer than the final tally in April.

Compare that with the opposition. The “no” votes fell from 9,174 in April, when the levy failed at the polls, to 7,047 in Tuesday night’s election. That’s a swing of 2,127 votes, enough for the supporters of the 63-cent St. Joseph School District levy to carry the day on the second try.

The News-Press will have a complete school levy election analysis in Thursday’s edition.
