Two Truman Middle School students are in custody in connection with prescription drug distribution in the school.
Capt. Janice Rothganger of the St. Joseph Police Department said the incident began at about 9:30 a.m. Thursday when a school counselor called police concerning a girl who was sick after admitting to ingesting a controlled substance.
Police arrested two juvenile females, both on suspicion of possession of alcohol and tobacco, and one for distribution of Lortab, a narcotic pain reliever. Police also made a juvenile referral for a male on possession of tobacco and alcohol.
Ms. Rothganger said three additional girls admitted to being sick after taking a combination of Lortab and Adderall, a psychostimulant medication. They were released to parents for medical check-ups.
“They were really fortunate that they didn’t get any sicker than they were,” Ms. Rothganger said. “Hopefully, they got sick enough where they won’t ever do that again, but not sick enough to where they won’t recover.”
