Area clubs collecting winter items for needy
by St. Joseph News-Press
Saturday, November 7, 2009

The Kiwanis Club of St. Joseph and the Key Club of Central High School are joining efforts to help provide winter coats, scarves, mittens, gloves and hats for St. Joseph’s Head Start program, managed by Community Action Partnership of Greater St. Joseph.

Head Start, established in 1965, is a comprehensive early childhood learning program designed to give children in poverty (or who have disabilities) the same chance to succeed in school as children from non-low-income families. About 500 children are served through Head Start across Northwest Missouri.

Through Nov. 13, the community is invited to bring gently used coats, scarves, mittens, gloves and hats to the following locations between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., Monday through Friday: Cornett Automotive, 1225 N. Fourth St., and Rolling Hills Consolidated Library, 1904 N. Belt Highway.

Any donation is appreciated, but sizes 3T to 5T will fit current children who attend Head Start across the area. Other sizes received will help support Head Start siblings, as well as other programs and organizations in St. Joseph. With questions, contact Jennifer Kendel of the Kiwanis Club at 261-2243.
