Olson turns in top 10 showing

Another year, another state medal for Hannah Olson.

St. Joseph Christian’s standout sophomore raked in her second top-10 finish in as many years when she finished 10th during the Class 1 race during Saturday’s Missouri Cross Country Championships in Jefferson City, Mo.

“Taking everything into considerations, I was very pleased, and I think she was, too,” Christian coach John Chavez said. “She has just done so well this year.”

As a freshman, Olson ran a remarkable race to finish fifth and turned in a similar performance this time around thanks to yet another strong start.

In the Class 3 competition, Benton senior John Beamon ripped off his best performance to date with a 36th-place showing in 17 minutes, 59 seconds. He didn’t crack the top 70 in his first two seasons.

“It was the race of his career,” Benton coach Duane Kimble said. “He’s kept working, and all of those pieces are starting to work together right now.”

Freshman teammate Kain Ellis finished 106th during his first state run.

On the girls’ side, a pair of Cardinals’ senior wrapped up their careers in courageous fashion.

Blayr Bolton also ran a remarkable race, according to Kimble, on the way to a 38th-place performance. It was her first appearance at the meet since her freshman season.

On the heels of a solid district showing, senior Taylor Woodruff struggled during her final race on the way to finishing 53rd.

Woodruff competed at the Class 3 meet all four years but couldn’t surpass the 36th-place finish she earned as a freshman.

“There’s nobody that’s given any more than she has the past four years,” Kimble said. “She’s one of the hardest working kids I’ve ever had.”

Meanwhile, Rachel Pankau — Central’s lone representative — exceeded her own expectations in the always-competitive Class 4 race.

The Indians’ sophomore sprinted out to a solid position in the opening half-mile and never slipped too far back in the pack.

She saw her efforts rewarded with a 53rd-place performance in 21:13 — much better than the top-100 goal she set for herself before the meet.

“I did better than I thought I would,” Pankau said. “I thought I would probably get boxed in and was prepared to do that. I was surprised that I was able to get out that well.”

Pankau narrowly qualified for state after coming in 23rd during last week’s sectional meet.
