Western women lose in exhibition opener

KANSAS CITY — The Western players tallied double figures, and the Griffons stayed close against their Division I opponent Saturday night. In the end, UMKC won 73-59 in the exhibition matchup.

UMKC bolted to an early lead and led 43-23 at halftime. Western came back and outscored the Kangaroos 36-30 in the final two quarters.

Western started the third quarter on a 7-0 run to close within 13, but UMKC responded with a 10-0 run and led by as many as 23. The Griffons committed 23 turnovers, and UMKC won the rebounding battle, 52-36.

Tierra Ford led the Griffons with 13 points followed by Brenna Saline’s 11 and 10 for Jessica Koch. Seven other players also tallied points for Western.
