Nixon reaches higher education funding deal

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon announced today that he's reached an agreement with the state's four-year university presidents to freeze tuition for the second year in a row in return for 95 percent of last year's appropriations.

Mr. Nixon made the announcement today in St. Louis. The News-Press will have reaction from two local university presidents later today.

"By helping keep higher education affordable," Mr. Nixon said in a news release, "we are taking bold steps to prepare the workforce that will move Missouri forward."

The agreement saves the state $42 million over what it spent on higher education last year. The agreement is still subject to approval by the General Assembly and the institutions' governing boards, according to the release.
