Fifth-grade teacher Glenda Haley and some of her students from Coleman Elementary check out an Intel netbook. All of Haley's students will receive a netbook as part of a pilot program between the St. Joseph School District and Intel.
It's a first for Intel and a first for the St. Joseph School District.
The 25 fifth-grade students in Glenda Haley's class at Coleman Elementary will be among the first in the nation to try out Intel's new netbook. The pilot program is a partnership between the school district, Intel and a group of software publishers.
"It sounds so exciting and thrilling," said Maggie McCarthy, one of the students in the class.
Rick Hartigan, chief operating officer of the school district, refers to the program as an experiment in relevancy, "what kind of teaching and learning experiences can elementary kids have with access to a computer 24/7?"
The class plans to integrate the computers into all aspects of their learning. It will be used for every subject, group projects, research, homework and presentations. The kids can take it to the library, home, or virtually anywhere to work on school projects.
"Our kids today are digital natives," said Mr. Hartigan. "They are very comfortable with the technology; they can't wait to get their hands on it."
The students are so comfortable, in fact, that textbook publishers are taking notice. Mr. Hartigan said the cost of producing a textbook is rising, and textbook companies are looking to repackage their books from print to digital. Mr. Hartigan hopes this will lead to lower textbook costs for school districts.
The students didn't seem to mind giving up a hard-copy textbook for a digital one. "I'm not really used to using a textbook. We are growing up in a digital age," said Wyatt Williams.
Intel donated the computers in exchange for feedback from the class. It would cost about $350 apiece to purchase the units. Intel is best known for supplying the processors that run computers, and this is the company's first foray into computer manufacturing. Intel tailored this particular model for educational use.
Mr. Hartigan hopes to have the netbooks for the students to take home for winter break, so they can get used to them and be ready to go in the spring semester.
There is no word yet on plans for the netbooks after this year. The students might take the computers with them to sixth grade, or another fifth grade class could use them.
Mr. Hartigan said the district's budget won't allow them to put a netbook into every student's hands anytime soon. But the information they gather from this program will help them make those kinds of decisions in the future.
"If we can't quantify hard data that shows that this strategy can lead to an enhancement in the teaching and learning process," he said, "then we won't do it."

BS if you want to test something that possibly all schools would use it would be better served to put them in schools like Hyde Hall,Humbolt,Mark Twain,Parkway, ect, ect.You would get a better idea of their use in these schools. It may be hard to analyze if they were spread around but put them all in one of these others schools for a change.Standards are all set by these schools which have been proven to do better and then the other children and schools suffer. What do we need a group called "Parents For Equal Education" for all St Joseph School children and schools. It seems like it to me.It is always oneside with these people.

Good grief, this is a program in which the school picked one class in one school to see how it works. The whole school didn't get them. MM I don't see parents from Coleman in 4th grade or sixth grade complaining thier class didn't get chosen. You really need to get that chip off your shoulder.
I think Sarah question is a fair one, could be teachers had to accept the project, I don't know.

mm, sorry your kid did not get a computer. You are taking a positive story that is being read by the parents and children of that class this morning with excitement and appreciation and devolving it into a hate-filled rant about how much you despise the SJSD. Have you no self-control? This is a positive story that could influence the rest of the district if it works out well. Hopefully your child will get their new computer sometime in the near future. For now, appreciate the fact that St. Joseph was chosen as one of the few towns in the nation to pilot this technology. THINK POSITIVE AND BE SUPPORTIVE OF THIS EFFORT!! :)

I think that this is really cool! Especially since it's a limited program. Not every school in the nation is getting these netbooks just a few. So complaining about it is silly. Maybe if the results are positive from this test bed Intel can sell enough of them to bring the price down more, and allow all of our children to have them. And if it was a grant writing situation good job to those who participated in it for thinking outside the box for our kids!!

Lets look at this our children had their computer class taken away from them their art room taken away from them as well as music room because of the schools that weere closed and moving the children around and you would not be just a little pissed about things. Also it has been 3 weeks since the levy passed and they Mr Smith said we would be looking at reinstating services that they had cut and to this date 3 weeks later nothing and I mean nothing has been done. The overcrowding they have caused has to be addressed for our children can have their classes back that was taken away from them. Some schools it was madde sure these were still offered to them but others not.I not saying this is not a good thing for the district but I am sick and tired of other schools not getting and more and more being taken away from them.I mind you I have honor roll children and they have had enough taken away from them as well as other children in the community and schools have. You people can think about me what ever the hell you want but the fact remains some schools are just there and the minium is done for them and nothing more.I do not want no children to go to school in tents but I want the programs and things offered at other school to be made avalible to all of the schools and children and it is not.

MM, maybe they chose Coleman over other schools due to the fact they have the teachers, students, and parents that support one another that allows this school to be one of very few in St. Joe to be a top rated school in the state.
You complain now that my kid didn't get a free netbook. Remember, this is a test that is being conducted. Who said this will even work. There could be a glitch with these netbook that may not allow them to work properly. Then all you would do is complain that my kids getting screwed with a piece of crap system that they wanted to try out in a poor school.
Finally, with the language that you post here, I could only wander why the SJSD wanted to not put this system in you school. I've always been told the fruit doesn't fall far from the tree.

A very wise man has taught me to first seek to understand before speaking. Until you understand the how and why please do not berate the situation. The problem in this case is with the reporter not understanding the audience in which they are writing for and not including the answer to Sarah's question. Before spouting off call the district office and ask the why and how, I did and I have the answer. If you get the answers to why and have issues with the answer then your complaints have merit, but unitl you know why Coleman was actually picked your rant just paints you as a bitter person.

I really don't see what the big deal is it is a win/win for our kids. These are "NETBOOK" pc's they are palm pilots with bigger screens. The over inflated valuation of $350.00 makes it look like a huge win for the SJSD and I suppose it is to some degree. Intel needs people to test its Moblin OS and they are trying to find their niche market for netbooks.

Myt life is just normal american life style just as yours probably is but I happen to stick up for the little guy and I happen to remember where I came from unlike some. I care about my children and their education.I also believe other schools should have the chance but the schools to the NE always get the opportunity's and the rest of the schools and children do not.
See this does nothing for their cause of the long term planning as well in the schools. Some of us parents care about our childrens education and just happen to watch things like this and express our concerns why alway are the schools to the NE selected to participate in these kind of situations and not some of the other schools.I garentee you that my children do as well in school as these children do in their schools ,I seem to remember just seeing my children progress report and seeing all A'S on them.We do spend quality time with our children and help them in their education but they are not offered the same education as some of the other schools are.Plain and simple.I think this is great for the kids but let some of the other schools participate in these programs. And for the ones who say us people in other areas of town will steal them or pawn them you are out of your minds not to mention out of line in judging us.Like I said "Parent For Quality Education In All Schools"in St Joseph is needed.
And also all thing that happens in any of our schools has to go through the district offices.I know this for a fact.

i had hoped that the reporter would visit the comments and provide an answer to my question, as has often been done in the past. also, i hope that the company which is involved in this has something to do with the stimulus money which has recently been provided to a local business to advance the use of netbooks..... in fact this may reasonably have been arranged by the grantee. this would be a WIN/WIN for the community.
the comment by fantome is problematic. mm, seriously, you are getting thumbs down from me on this one, as is drb, who admitted a while ago that he might not even vote on the recent levy. you guys are all showing why this community is going to continue to have such trouble prospering.
obviously further testing will be forthcoming. i am thinking that if i were looking to advance my project with positive numbers it would be best served by targeting a school in which the students had the highest likelihood of having regular access to computers, in which case an Assumption Could be made that one of the higher income schools would provide the most supportive initial data.
and yes, this is a great thing for our schools. i have purposely stayed away from much in the comments on Any schools issue. you are right apple, i could have been more enthusiastic.

I did talk about the selection process with Mr. Hartigan. They were looking for a teacher that had experience with this style of teaching and the technology skills to go along with it. Mr. Hartigan never said I need a teacher at this school or that school, he just needed a qualified fifth-grade teacher. He then worked with the curriculum office to find a suitable teacher, and that ended up being Glenda Haley.
Mr. Hartigan says decisions like these are always difficult with so many options to choose from. Hope that helps.

This is a great thing for our schools but you are telling me this is the only school that had a qualified teacher to do this? Come on I was not born yesterday it was the day before.
Thanks UFC08 I hope things are better in our school when you do have children and they go to school here.I appreciate the fact you see things for what they are and some people just still have blinders on or they are the ones who always benefit while others get what they need for their schools and no more.Look at the Neely Students what they got and the Webster students they really got what they deserved didn't they?No they got what they should have not got but they could care aless.Look at how the TF campaigned for the levy and look at the Buchanan county web site to see the election results and you will find that the NE is the only reason the levy passed what does that tell you the rest of St Joseph wants answers and wants change but they will never listen.Board elections are in April hopefully we will get 2 pro community members this time and make the remaining members jobs a little miserable.Just my opinions and I do not care if people agree or not.

i thank mr. schmidt for clarification.
that said, on the face of this, it would appear that If the sole criteria was a teacher with this kind of experience one would question on several levels.
if ms haley is the Only qualified teacher in this area, one should ask Why? you might further question the "fairness" issues as to her placement in one of the schools which is constantly being held up as being in the NE/priveleged area?
on a purely public relations level, this ranks with the choice of the HR department head having designated his own wife as the Most Qualified in the district to move up the ladder with a promotion to a department head ( i think that was her title).
this kind of decision making process is consistently and with some validity brought up as problematic. it remains a difficulty which is a serious blind spot for the district. you all know my expressed concerns of unequal access for all students, a problem which is now even more exacerbated with the change in policy for open enrollment.
however, this does NOT diminish the fact that if this program takes hold the entire district will undoubtable benefit, and the point should be, first and foremost, that progress. sadly, the result of the glaring PR issue could overshadow this incredibly positive program.

mm1967,
It's none of your business, or mine, for that matter, if applesense has children in the district. Furthermore, since we ALL pay taxes, regarless of whether we have children or not, all have a voice....or at least that's MY opinion.
I, too, don't undersand your angst regarding the article. I have no idea why Ms. Haley was selected. Perhaps they put out a district-wide survey asking who'd be interested in a pilot program. Perhaps she's the only one who answered. Perhaps she IS uniquely qualified to participate in this sort of teaching. Why? I don't know....and personally, I don't care. To me, if this turns out to be beneficial, I'd imagine the district will work toward getting more teachers "qualified".
That brings me to my next point. Can someone please tell me where, exactly, in the article, where it stipulates Ms. Haley was the only teacher "qualified"? Other than a poster saying that Ms. Haley had experience in this sort of teaching, I find nothing. I'd also point out that there are very few schools, NATIONWIDE, participating in this pilot program. Why zero in with all the hate toward Coleman or Eugene Field?
mm1967, after reading MANY of your posts, I have a feeling had this program been placed in YOUR child's school, and YOUR child's classroom, you'd be on here complaining about the district causing damage to your child's education by not teaching them in the "tried and true" ways. I have a feeling you're going to be unhappy with the St. Joe School District, no matter what happens or what they do.
Personally, I view this as a tremendous step forward, and a great honor for our district to be chosen to participate in the program.

It is a test and study for a company to better market their product, not a long term program. Students get an opportunity to benefit from it. That is an excellent thing and this is exactly what occurs in the real world now, it is how many people conduct their work and business, on a remote computer. The challenge is how to make this study into a program that is a long term one and beneficial to all students in all schools. There are similar programs throughout the country like this where districts are paying for it and do not have a corporate sponsor. These programs teach students how business is conducted with the technology out there and gears them for the world when they become adults. Things like this go right to the core of why permenant funding is important. This is what a levy should be about, funding, future state programs such at this, not day to day maintaining or "black cloud" scenarios. This study has a shelf life, that means it will end at some point in time. What should be done now is figuring out how to leverage the potential of something like this into a long term strategic program for all schools starting at a pre-determined grade level. And the most important thing of all, fund it. The present way of how we fund our educational processed do not address that. These are topics that should be discussed at board meetings by all, administration, board members, and the public. Future state, not status quo. This is where long range planning needs to be focused on, anyone from that group, you listening? Long range planning, future state, anyone looking at this study and trying to work on ideas to make it into a program within the Long Range Planning committee or are we still focused on consulting groups?

john, along with your train of thought, I wonder if the district has a formal effort to seek out these opportunities? Have they sought an invitation to apply to the Gates Foundation (which does not accept unsolicited requests)? Are the teachers rewarded for seeking and obtaining these opportunities for their students? It does not all have to be big items like this, but small ones add up also. Don't forget the Empower Center and its programs.

If the district was smart it would hire a professional grant writer to at a minimum help the teachers and other professionals do these in a competent manner. I know one kid who went to school here who now does this in another city (doubt he would move back) and is very successful for his non-profit. It is a skill and an art. Seek funds. Here is one. The UP Foundation (Union Pacific RR) has a program for principals: http://www.principalspartnership.com/ They don't do grants to schools, but they are a resource.
Perhaps the district should be doing an annual report to the community which would detail the grants, big and small, and programs like this that help the district. Tell us.

I think it's great that they chose Coleman. You know Coleman is not the elite school you may think it is. They have a large amount of free and reduced lunch children. I think this school represents a fair and balanced classroom. It definitely has a good mix of demographics and Glenda Haley is willing to go above and beyond her regular classroom duties to take this challenge on. You know, she doesn't get any extra money for this-nothing, nada, zippo! Just this little article and and bunch of bs comments by mm1967. Wahhhh wahhhh boo hoo! I believe Coleman had no art room for two years (it's called art on a cart) until recently. Who cares about computer lab?! What a waste of time! Playing games while the teachers have a break!!! mm1967-you REALLY need to know what you are talking about.

I also bet your school is not nowhere near 500 students either is it when it was around 350 till school closings and redistricting. If you were a parent of a student that had to put up with this you would be a little upset as well.As well as all of the things I mentioned before our school losing for our children.

You go on and on about how east side parents don't understand your end of town, do you know what Coleman kids have or not have? Im sure you guys have runnning water just as sure that Coleman dosent have gold water foutains. Coleman was part of the redistrict as well you know. Colemans gym is even to small to even practice basketball. My kids could not walk to Coleman, they would have had to cross a major interstate to do so and were over two miles away.
Again get this through your thick head, this is a program that affects ONE GRADE NOT THE ENTIRE SCHOOL -

We would love to have some trailers to eliminate the high numbers in our classrooms this year maybe they can spare some for us.What do you think? We could use 3 or 4 of them.I think Skaith could use some as well I bet those parents would agree as well.Lets also talk about the kids that Coleman would acccept when transfers were allowed do you think thet took children whose grade suffered and did not learn as quickly? You know the answer.
As well this could be just one grade in one of the other schools as well could it not?Oh that's right this is the only qualified teacher to do this I forgot.I bet some of the other 5th grade teachers would have somehing to say about this but that's right they may get fired for speaking their minds.I just so sinical but have a point if you think so or not.Ha
You know you talk about a major highway and your children having to cross one to get to school take them to school we have every year and everyday taken them and pick them up everyday it is not that hard and it is being involved in your children school life and their school as our family is involved.

I am by no means a Coleman booster, my oldest son went there through his entire elementary education and my youngest went there 2 years until the re-redistricting and we couldn't have been happier about his new school. One reason the media always seems to be at Coleman is because it puts the spotlight on Molly Pierce and she loves the spotlight.
That being said though my stance on this is big fricking deal the kids will use these over-sized pda's for a few months, Intel will get their publicity and that will be the last that the district will ever see them.

Parkway has 389.
Humboldt has 385.

The remainder have less than 300.

You numbers were last year before redistricting happened and schools were closed so they are worthless at this point.Parkway for example went to a few numbers shy of 500.And if Coleman has 500 students they have trailers to handle the over flow of students Parkway does not.Skaiths numbers have went up as well from this number drbjr has posted.Hydes number went up as well.I had looked these numbers up as well and like I said they were from last year. Also if Colemans has 500 students still which I heard they do not and the schools that do where are their trailers to handle the increase in students this year?So I guess that Coleman has something the other schools that had a increase in students do not have.
Also after looking at Mr Pierce's credentials I think she is more qualified to be our Super of schools then Mr Smith is.Pops I will call and get those numbers for you if you want to know but I am telling you I know for a fact about one of the schools I listed above has had a hugh increase over last years numbers.

The goal should be how to capitalize on this study after Intel goes away, turn it into a educational program and make it a continuous process to be funded in all schools. If there was one teacher in the entire district who was selected as being the only "qualified" person to handle this type of study, then effort needs to be placed on getting others within the district to that level, and that requires investment in training, funding. There is such a unique opportunity here to carry it to higher levels, and that should be looked at and capitalized on. Could be a good campaign argument for that permenant levy thing when it comes up again instead of the "black cloud" scenario. These are directions long range planning should take. Progression opportunities for all students, all schools. Simple concept, one this community continues struggle with.

"Equal education and Equal opportunities for Children In all schools" If you truly think your children are not getting the same quality of education then I have a bridge to sell you. Does the SJSD hold secret meetings when they are hiring perspective teachers and when they come across an above average candidate they say "Well this person was top of their class we need to make sure they don't go to Parkway or Hyde, Lindbergh, or Lake Contrary." Of course they don't. If one school has something that another does not you can almost bet it has something to do with a fund-raising event the school itself had. I have personally donated a computer to one of my kids classes. Was that unfair to the other classes in the school? Did I give my child an unfair advantage?
Ultimately what it comes down to is parental involvement I'm not suggesting you spend a bunch of money but instead of bit*hing and moaning behind your computer do something. If this netbook thing is so important to you find a company or companies in your area that might be willing to donate money or netbooks themselves.

Pops,
That is not selfish it is a matter of equal opportunity's in all schools and for all children. This is not different then equal opportunity's in the work place. I guess this is something you do not seem to understand pops, because you always want tot turn it around the otherway towards me.I would bet you my last dollar if you walked into Lake Contrary and then walked into Coleman or Field you would find the differences I speak of.I think that statement of selfishness is needed to be turned around the other way.
Wonder what would happen if a complaint with the district about equal education and equal opportunity's in all schools for all children?
Fantome,
You still fail to see what I am talking about and believe me I have not failed to give my children anything the district has just because of where I chose to live plain and simple.

Please everyone -- until we know whether it was Coleman that applied for the grant, please stop all the hating. Also, Coleman has a very low turnover rate, so most of the students will be back after Christmas. In other schools, lots of the students would switch schools or even leave town. In order to get good data for Intel (and after all, Intel is doing this so they can get good data) they need a school with the best chance of doing that. And I second everyone's comments about Glenda Haley. Glenda goes above and beyond every single day.

As for the engagement of the community I have said you can't engage all the people and mm is a classic example as to why. He cares not to find solutions and work as the community as a whole. He only sees hate and cannot see anyone in the east without distaste.
We need people from all aspects of the community, but only those seeking solutions and make the district better.

I decided that I needed a good laugh today, so I read the blogs! I am the principal at Coleman and I also taught at Humboldt and Ellison Schools and was once the principal at Skaith. All of these schools are quality schools, with quality teachers and principals who have areas of strength and points of pride to share. I'd like to clarify your "concerns" about the Intel project. For years, all St. Joseph Schools have written long-range School Improvement Plans (SIPs) to guide their professional development efforts and their learning goals. For over 10 years, the Coleman staff and parents listed the integration of technology as a priority for our students and staff. We wrote several grants over the past few years that funded additional tech training. One of those training events was the "Apple Classroom of Tomorrow Teacher Development Program." Through the Coleman staff's innovative use of district-provided technology (the same computers and software that are available in every other school in town), we were named a Northwest Missouri Technology Professional Development School by the MODESE and we opened our doors to educators and state legislators. Each year we expanded our SIP plan to include technology innovation. When approached by Intel, the school SIP plans were used to determine which schools had a history of placing a high priority on technology. Coleman fit the criteria and was determined, by Intel, to be a perfect match.
I feel sorry for those who are constantly trying to pit one school or one part of town against the other. For example, there are many schools in town that receive Title 1 federal funding which Coleman does not receive, but you don't see our parents and teachers crying the blues on these blogs. By the way, Coleman has 28% free and reduced lunch.
As for publicity, our projects and successes speak for themselves. Many times they are newsworthy. We are creative, innovative, and we work hard. If your school is not getting the publicity that you would like to see, join your PTA or speak to your principal about getting more newsworthy articles in the paper. If you want your school to focus on technology, find out if it's in the school's SIP plan. Good things are happening in all of our schools. Most of these blogs don't make sense, and many of you speak without any real knowledge of the subject. Others just like to play the blog game and try to get people stirred up. Rabbler Rouser, you're definitely the minority....and mm1967, you evidently don't know me...I care about kids and many of the students on transfer were the children of single moms or parents who relied on grandma and grandpa as babysitters so they could work and make a living. I take my job very seriously and care about kids, so please refrain from personal comments when you have no idea who I am. Let's be happy about the successes in all of our schools instead of looking for trouble where it doesn't exist.

Map,
I Understand your points and I am very glad you do what you do for your school.
To me this is not about publicity for our school it is about equal education and equal opportunity's in all school in the SJSD.I would have thought if your school had this many students you would have not accepted any more transfers because of overcrowding. Now this year our school is overcrowded(a handfull from 500 students) and we have no trailers to handle the additional children who have been moved to our school due to the school closings and redistricting. We also have a very great staff at our school and our principle is great and we could not ask for a better staff. But we could ask for the overcrowding issues to be addressed. We could also ask for our computer classroom back, our art room back, our music room back. Our school also has very dedicated parents and volunteers and we want the best for our children as all parents do.I happen to just speak out when our children get pushed and shoved by the district and we cannot get any answers. You know our computer lab is on wheels and our teacher has to go to class room to class room and set up each time how much time do you think allows for her with our children? The levy was passed and there is 2 less school to fund and they were not going to close them if the levy had passed in April till 2011 so now that it has passed lets solve some of the issues such as overcrowding in our schools.
Also by your teaching in these other school you know as well as I do this community is divided when it comes to this subject and always has been and needs to change.
There is also a hugh trust issue and a hugh PR problem with your employer in the community and they have learned nothing as of yet on this issue. It also seems like now that the levy has passed they are going back to STATUS QUO.So you see there is some trouble that exist and needs addressed.
Now to your 7:14 pm post we have this issue now and I am not going to sit by for 5 years and not express my concerns over the situation it needs to change.

1. A student directory bound in embossed leather.
2. Special direction and training on how to get better grades in high school
3. Cafeteria's with chefs trained at the Culinary Institute of America.
4. Field trips to Chicago and New York aboard the special chartered 757s.
5. Special guest teachers with PhDs in their subject area.
6. All new books every year.
7. All new PE equipment every year.
8. Unlimited art supplies.
9. Christmas programs are recorded and video'd and free CDs and DVDs are distributed to the families in hand crafted cases.
10. Play day includes visits from pro athletes who compete with the kids.
11. The real Santa visits these kids and brings them Xbox360s, Wiis, Gamecubes, playstations, etc. with 55 inch plasma TVs to play them on.

the "profiles of the schools" on the sjsd site have not been updated since 07-08 , but i am astounded that you chose to bring in the snipe regarding title one funding, especially in light of the comparatively low percentage of free lunch students you enjoy at coleman. i am certain the numbers have changed and sadly the district has chosen not to update this information so accurate comparison can be made, but Surely you do not mean to insinute that you would begrudge a school such as humboldt, laboring under the weight of 92% free lunch stats ,the assistance they recieve? that would be irresponsible in excess.

I think its fair to say Coleman has faced overcrowding for a very long time dispite what the numbers today may or may not be. My kids went to Coleman and I can tell you they had large class sizes and no art room at the time. I know for a fact many transfers were not from higher income, in fact I believe Coleman caused their own overcrowding by accepting more transfers than they should, in fact, Im not aware of Coleman ever turning down a transfer.
MM claims to be speaking up for kids the district treats as second fiddle, yet when asked what East side kids get that his kids schools don't, he can't answer. This is the problem with so many in this community, they feel as if someone is getting more than them or they are entitled to things that don't exist. Its time to grow up, mm you say your kids are honor roll students so they must be getting a good education so whats the problem?
Simpy put, if you don't know what the other schools have or don't have, how can you claim they get more than your kids.
Dispite coutless people even Sarah telling mm is off base regarding this artical he just can't accept it.

Here is a suggestion, move forward in constructive and postive ways by encouraging the Long Range Planning Committee to put less focus on consulting groups and more focuse on how projects like this can be implemented it their fullest potential in all schools. If there are certain schools that do not meet criteria because it is clear that was brought out on here, then this committee should be focused on finding solutions to get those schools in making that criteria. As to the information presented about the Intel project and other things concerning several schools, Sarah is absolutely correct, this is valuable information that could be posted on internet sites. As to the schools that are in Title 1 status, this is another issue the long Range Committee should tackle, find solutions to get those schools out of that status, unless the district and public do not want them to, and we always stay in status quo. As a citizen and taxpayer, I ultimately want to see my tax dollars that go to education go to improvements of educational processes across the board, not for percentage increases to free lunch programs and continual support of schools in
Title one status that remain the same year after year. Title One status in my view means opportunity to improve and get of that status, just like NCLB. A program designed to improve.

Your missing the point here. What Dr. Pierce is saying is that Coleman's priority (SIP plan) may be to expand their technology, Hosea or Hyde's SIP plan may be on behavior, grades, or attendance. That's the same way with a certain household's plan, should I use my bonus this year to pay towards our mortgage versus, how are we going to make our housepayment this month. Different schools have different needs, and I doubt some of those schools needs right now are on technology. The teachers and principals are doing what's best for their school
November 22, 2009 at 11:17 p.m. ( permalink | suggest removal )
johncourter says...
I disagree. Schools are not households, they are in the business of education. The goal should be to get all schools up to speed on technologies associated with the real world. That is how many people work in their careers right now. Behavior issues are a social issue, and if SIP plans are focused on those issues as primary needs, then more focus needs to be placed in the social services areas on how to combat that. Schools need to gear their environments towards education. Again this is where the Long Range Committee should apply its focus. Dig up those SIPs and see if they appropriately address the educational needs and future improvement goals. Have they met the goals stated five years ago, 10 years ago, if not, why not? Obviously there is a disconnect somewhere, when we had several schools not meet NCLB. So was that issue addressed in any SIP several years back and were the goals met? And if some school needs are not on technology, then why? They should be, they all should be, there is no excuse for any school not to be. Find the right resources to address the social issues and work on education improvements in tandum. Lets take those SIPs further. Where are plans to address future states of building conditions, evironments, etc? These are the things that should have been brought up during the levy issue.

Sarah - this is not the first time you railroaded a positive story regarding the school district, Newspress had a story about the new teachers coming to the schools the start of the year and your kept posting your negative viewpoints.
Sara, John and mm have their own version of what our schools should be, when they are defeated by the voters or by the board, miss, "I will support the effort" they come on here and stomp thier feet like little children.

Coleman had been overcrowded for a long time before trailers were brought in and they came before a school year when they budgeted for them. You yourself know that the new levy does not take become part of the school budget until December of 2010.
Your comments have NOTHING to do with this stoy and your small minded thinking that this artical is another example of the East schools getting something your kids don't.
Kids could be going to nice brand new schools but voters voted it down, the district needed to close down schools, what did you want them to do, close the onle east side school down, Coleman?
Why can't you answer a simple question, have you been to Coleman, do you know how crowded they are? I said they brought in trailers, I didn't say that solved anything.
Lets see, you think the district is killing your kids with the H1N1 and now you think the district is bad for getting a pilot program, one of the very few in the nation. Wow -
Get some self respect back - admit to everyone you are way off base on your comments on this artical, admit you are wrong and maybe, just maybe some people will listen to what you say, if not you will always be looked upon as some negative hateful person who will never be able to see common reason. Has anyone asked if Intel or the software publishers had any input in the selection of Coleman for this program? This is a wonderful opportunity for our school district, regardless of the school chosen. There are always going to be people unhappy with the whatever/whoever/however decisions the SJSD makes on behalf of district schools.
Molly Pierce runs an excellent school which receives statewide recognition on a regular basis. She is a hard working dedicated professional. Yes, she likes publicity for her school because she's proud of the accomplishments of student and teachers.
I would guess that Rabble Rouser is a disgruntled parent and for every disgruntled parent at Coleman there are many more parents that would welcome the opportunity to sing her praises.

I hope you don't mind my saying this because often times I think you have some reflective posts, but your remarks about Dr. Pierce are unfounded. I don't think that Dr. Pierce is seeking to validate herself, but I feel compelled to validate her as an professional educator dedicated to her students. I can assure you that we were treated no differently than the other children at our school and that our principal didn't begrudge us. Dr. Pierce is one of my personal role models and has had a positive impact on my life. My education at Skaith was "creative, innovative, and hardworking", just like Dr. Pierce described the atmosphere at Coleman. These are professional qualities that Dr. Pierce brings to her job. I'm sorry she can't be the principal at every school in the district for she is a person of great integrity and has a passion for learning. Whatever sort of advocacy you hope to promote for Free Lunch kids, please know that we're not all disadvantaged when we grow up. In fact, I can hardly consider myself disadvantaged when I was in elementary school because I know that my principal and my teachers provided me with a stellar education. More than that, I was taught to value my intellect in a way not to offend, oppress, or harm other people. Please know, that I am responding to you now because your comment about Dr. Pierce has a tone that doesn't sit well with me personally. You seem intelligent and have some great opinions, I hope that you will use them to add value to our local discourse and refrain from attacking others. I am happy that Intel chose one of our local schools to participate in the the technological future of education. I'm not surprised to learn that Coleman received the opportunity. I know Dr. Pierce's students are highly qualified for the job! Go Cougars!

After watching the video the students seem so happy and I am glad for them.350 dollars a piece per student compaired to what is the price of all text books per student?Or is all of our text book outdated in the schools. OR have our district not bought new text books for years to keep up to date with the ever changing education practices? Now if this test works out and the info gathered is on a positive note then I think if the price is compairable to the price of text books per students then the district needs to look at implementing this in the schools all schools.

lamplighter, you are correct in mentioning that often comments can be taken out of the context of conversation on the comments. i was , and remain uncomfortable with the choice to point out that coleman has no title one funding...... and the PS regarding the "did any one care about coleman's overcrowding "? .......
coleman is, by comparison, a very priveleged and excellent school. coming here to clarify a point on the program was an excellent thing to do. perhaps, dr. pierce should have left well enough alone? but then she is only human, and just as the BOE is often characterized as feeling "put upon" i can see that many administrators might feel embattled.
i appreciate very well that scrutiny will be part of my life in the coming months. it was part of the difficult decision i made when i decided to try to participate in the process. surely i got a small sample of it from my activism in the levy issue!

This is childish, your the one that came on here and posted negative comments about the school district because Coleman was selected as the story puts it 25 students to be part of a national pilot program and you now go on and on about being unfair.

An incomplete story leads to comments based on incomplete information. I must say reading a portion of these posts just makes me tired. Some of these diatribes remind me of the story of the man turning down a million dollars because to receive it he would have to allow his neighbor to receive two million.
How about the fact that we were selected at all? Do some of you not realize it was the confidence in the administration that created this opportunity in the first place? More importantly it was my confidence in this administration that created the opportunity for our district to participate.
There are three schools that are going to participate in this pilot out of 10,000's in the US that will not. The St. Joseph School District has the opportunity to determine in first principles how technology can further the acquisition of knowledge.
This pilot represents the culmination of 100's of hours of work and $1000's of dollars of expense, none of which has been borne by the schools participating. International firms in hardware, software and textbook publishing have come together to develop this pilot. Additionally, trainers in the use of technology in K-12 will be flown in to instruct pilot participants who can then share their knowledge with other teachers.
If the St. Joseph School District is successful in its execution of the pilot, it positions itself above competing school districts in the seeking of future grants due to the knowledge and experience gained. Any reasoned advocate of the betterment of our children's education should be cheering for our administrations success. SJSD's professional implementation can create the opportunity for all of our children to benefit.
I hope this is the beginning of something transformative for our students futures. I also hope that the firms supporting this pilot do not read some of these comments and judge the worthiness of their investment in our community by them.

See some of your fellow NE residents have said things such as you people would just pawn them or steal them.Better one was you all probably do not have high speed internet. So you see the rest of this community has a reason to question things the SJSD does. And the people who have made comments like listed above do nothing more then divide the community further.

mm1967, your posts are the most divisive on these articles on average. You genuinely appear to have a serious problem with the NE side of the city. I don't want to label it with some term like hate or jealousy because I'm not sure what is the problem. I have reached the conclusion that the only way you would be happy with a decision of anyone to do something would be if the NE side of town gets it last or not at all. Frankly I do not understand why. My child's school has things that perhaps others do not. Things bought with parental money sometimes via the PTA, sometimes not. My child is fortunate enough to get to travel to other places during the school year. Yes, a little school is missed, but other things are learned and experienced. This is not uncommon at our school. Should my child be prohibited from traveling with me during the school year just because a child in another area of the city is unable to do so? Should I have to pay a fee to the school to fund trips for other children? You had a choice when you bought your house to live where you do, as did heritage, as did sense, etc. Such a choice comes with consequences, benefits and detriments. I have an old house, as does heritage I believe. We live with the choice to have an old house (out of date wiring, I would kill for a dishwasher). You, as I recall, have lived in St. Joseph your entire life. You developed this complex over many years. Had you really believed your children would be shortchanged by not living in the northeast, why would you make that decision? It's illogical and stupid. Don't say ypu can't afford a house in the Northeast. There are nice houses of many price ranges available. I looked at a new (old) house last week. Nice house, well maintained (needs updating) but my child would have to change grade schools and I don't want that. So I will continue to live in my smaller house with no dishwasher (I would really like one but can't due to cabinet issues!) I live with my choice (and dishpan hands). At some point you need to grow up, realize that you must live with the decisions you have made and get on with live. The young person who posted here that attended Skaith has no problems. I wonder why you do. In the meantime, take your kids to as many different things as you can. Broaden their horizons so they realize there is a big world out there for them to experience. Do some research on the web to learn about other curricula than what the SJSD uses and see what holes you think need to be filled. Check out books at the library to fill those holes. Get in the car and go somewhere to learn. Eagle days is coming up at Squaw Creek ... take the kids. Take them to the Robidoux Resident Theater production of "The Lion in Winter" next month. Tickets start at $9.00. (I have absolutely no relationship to RRT.)

As to the story, great job school district and congratulations to Coleman and the staff at Coleman. A great choice for this program and I know you guys will do the district proud. This is just another example of our tax dollars in great hands with a district which wins these programs which only a few in the country receives. Your vision and leadership can lead past these posts and the few who would rather stand in the rain and complain then go inside and get dried. Great story about a great school district. Congratulations

Sense, I stand by everything I have to say, there are validations to support my rationale of thinking, and if you disagree with it, so be it but "Stomp my feet like a child" being directed at me is an uncalled for comment. I have no agenda. I have a valid rationale on this and I know perfectly well this is a pilot program. That is also a concern, this program has a shelf life. I had nothing what so ever negative to say against the program so I do not know where that is coming from. I stated very clearly this was an excellent opportunity that should be expanded upon and I made the suggestion the Long Range Planning Committee should focus efforts on assisting to expand this program and finding solutions to make into a permenant solution instead of worrying about hiring a consulting firm. I think that is very relevant. Programs like this should be merging into all schools and the social concerns need to be treated as a separate issue. I have no agenda. I voice my opinions and concerns like many others and have every right to do so. I believe the school issues are the most important element facing this community and it needs to get resolved. I stand by everything I have had to say on all issues. I believe many directions are going down paths that may prove to be detrimental, the recent levy passage is one of them. To make it clear, I think it was a bad move, and I will not sugar coat it. That decision holds this community back in progressive growth for funding opportunities and in my view supported the original Axiom platform back in Apr. The district did not have the confidence to spend extrat time to re-argue and gain the buy in to what is truly needed for the future. I think the
Long Range Planning Committee has taken a direction that is not conducive to future progression. On the other side of the fence, I believe this Intel program is a huge step forward in a positive direction, but this program moves forward, at some point in time programs like this will have to be funded by the district. Private business is not going to fund this permenantly if it proves to be success, unless there is something I am missing. I think it is a great program with excellent involvement, but there needs to be a permenant committment to it somewhere down the line or it will become like many pilot programs, when time comes to evaluate, it will either end or the opportunity to continue it will come into play and that means some tax dollar funding support. That is where the Longe Range Committee should come into play. And to close, MAP brought in the SIP element into this forum and opened the door for further debate and discussion. I think that should go much further.

For Gods sake, it was a program that only a few districts across the country received, how in the world can anyone question it, have concerns over it and bitch about it,
John I know you don't like the direction so be it, do you support mm posts on these matters? I really hope not -

You know what apple I am a hero in my childrens eyes and that is all that matters to me.More parents need to stand up for their children and their beliefs instead of getting pushed and shoved and walked on by the district.
Now I never ask Mr Courter to support my post so why drag him into it.
I happen to agree with Mr Courter I just happen to come off and say thing point blank if you or anybody else like it I say it as I see it.If you think the community's children are getting equal education so be it I do not beleive they are.If you believe they are getting equal opportunity's so be it but I do not.
If you want answers on ow things are different go out and see for yourself.Because I am not going to answer any of your questions.I will say one thing remember I have seen some of this first hand I grew up in the southend of town and remember.I no longer live there but things are not all sugar coated as you would like to believe in our schools and the education is not the same from school to school and the opportunity's are not as well for the children in all schools.

dagnabbit, you guys had the very person who IS responsible for this program here Telling you that this story is INCOMPLETE and still the griping and fighting for the sake of fighting.
this is SO much bigger than one class getting a study. st joseph stands in line to get a massive injection of jobs and investment in downtown with the local interest. this has the potential to bring as many quality jobs as BI, and we are focusing on a single story which completely missed the boat in its information. the articles i posted links to tell some of the story. i knew this and that was why i asked the first question..... to prod the reporter to dig deeper into the" FILET "which is being put in front of us, instead of just talking about "hamburger".
thank you WSB for coming into the insanity and trying to explain what the NP left out. i am certain that we will be hearing the rest of the story in weeks to come. you are doing great things for st joseph .

Well H I have to give you credit when its due - the following form a September 1st artical in the NP
Mr. Bennett and his partners say the specifics of their business plan are subject to change. However, it is notable that the partners already have secured a pilot program with Intel in which select local schools will use small laptop / computer tablets in the classrooms. Jumbofox will provide software that will enable the use of digitized textbooks, tests and more - for the pilot and beyond, if this bet pays off.
So clearly this came from this new company coming from thier new downtown location. What I ask you then is if you wanted this information to come out, why did you ask why Coleman was selected instead of a more direct and obvious question like, is this connected to the new company coming downtown called Jumbofox? You certainly did this company any favors by getting the school issues part of the story.
MM - your posts have about as much meaning as a beauty queen constistant telling everyone she wants world peace.

Apple /sence you know where you can take yourself i will not continue down this path with you.It is a great opportunity if it pays off but the other issue no matter what you think still exist but you have blinders to the fact because you do not live in the rest of theof the community and see things but that's ok stay in your box.

i did not feel it was my place to make comments beyond the information in the previous articles. i don't know mr. bennett and had no idea if this information was left out because he preferred it not to be revealed at this time. as the article stated, the situation is flexible.
i go to enough meetings and track downtown activity pretty closely, but it was for sure not my place to "out" jumbofox.
now, can we all just chill and wait for more complete information?

WSB,
Thanks for the info and I hope it is a sucess and it will help ALL St Joseph schools. But 1 comment I like to make our SJSD administration and sucess I am sorry I see them as complete failures. Not knowing how to communicate with the general public.Doing things and then not answering for them.Creating positions for your family members and spending money for things like furniture when not needed. And by the way I have heard teachers in the system comment on this position I speak of above about being created for a family member when there were more qualified people.
This is just a viscous cycle with these people they continue to be their own worst enemies and are blind to the fact that there are areas of town that do not support them.It is simple complete transparentcy anything less is unacceptable. They smilded the night the levy passed and now think everything is hunky dory but it is not look at the election results and see what area supported them and the areas that did not. This going to carry over to any longer term planning for the schools just watch and see it play out in the coming months.

wow - what can I say - as I said, mm is a complete lost cause when it comes to schools, I thought perhaps he really wanted to communicate and look for answers, I challenge John and Sarah and disagree, but I do beleive they at least look at all sides of an issue. MM can't and simply won't which is to bad because there is no way a person with his attidude could ever be part of any discussion concerning the schools at all. How can a person tell me "where I can take myself" and then wish me a happy thanksgiving?
You really need to talk someone about this, it consumes you and you are so filled with hate, I don't know what the schools did to you but your messed up. It can't be good for your kids either this has to work itself to them it just has to. For the sake of your family you really need some theropy, I know losing a job is tuff and you are probably going through a tuff time. Get away from the comuputer and really, get some help.
I won't argue with you anymore because you are dealing with issues beyond the schools.

ahh yes the st. joe uneducated speak, did you all ever stop to think that the teacher applied for the grant which is required then intel selected them??? sounds like a real tough process but with grants you have stipulations that must be met (i.e. sending them wherever you want to in the district there is data that must be recorded etc.. think a little bit joe town don't sound off on here like you have no good sense.

Someone had mentioned that there are things that do happen in the school that are positive that we dont hear about..I can assure you that this is true...I can tell you that I personally wrote a grant and won over $500.00 in books to give to my school to the children..Now thats not alot of money, but any amount of free books I will humbly accept and any books I can put in the hands of children is my goal..I am not a bragger, I am not in the field to boast my ego and this was never put in any paper etc...I also know one of the reason my grant won was that my school is one of the lower income schools, with many single parent homes, and the grant committee recognized this...this was an advantage for us, as stats show these families have lower reading scores etc this is not an insult but a national and local fact my friends and something I am hoping to help with every single day..i am sure no one would of complained about me winning on this criteria...so lets just please celebrate our accomplishments and have a blessed remainder of the year..
