Three men accused in the murder of Antonio Maravilla Vargas appeared in Andrew County court Thursday morning. Defendants Jose Quintero and Orlando "Sleepy" Cruz appeared together. Meanwhile, Enrique Hernandez-Hernandez sat behind at the witness stand. Mr. Hernandez was called as the prosecution's first witness.
As you will recall Mr. Quintero, Mr. Cruz, Mr. Hernandez and La Mesa restaurant owner Antonio Onate are all charged in the murder of Maravilla Vargas.
Thursday, through an interpreter, Mr. Hernandez recalled the night of Mr. Maravilla Vargas' murder and the events that led up to it. Mr. Hernandez claims Mr. Onate asked him to find someone to make Mr. Maravilla Vargas '"disappear." He testified the two men he found were Jose Quintero and Orlando Cruz.
According to Mr. Hernandez the evening of May 2nd, he, Mr. Quintero and Mr. Cruz picked up Mr. Maravilla Vargas and drove to the area near Woodbine and Messanie.
It was there that Mr. Hernandez claims Mr. Cruz shot Mr. Maravilla Vargas in the back of the head. He then says Mr. Cruz directed him to a gravel road in Andrew County where they dumped the body. Mr. Hernandez says Jose Quintero stabbed Mr. Maravilla Vargas in the neck before they took him out of the car, and Mr. Cruz shot him one last time while he was on the ground.
The fourth defendant, Antonio Onate, waived his right to a preliminary hearing and is scheduled for an arraignment October 23rd.
