Stand-up comedian Kevin Bozeman takes the stage at Sammy and Casey's on Oct. 10.

The only thing missing was quality comedians who would be willing to work consistently in St. Joe. But DeSpain took a few pointers from his friends at Famous Johnny’s Comedy Club in Overland Park, Kan., and now Sammy and Casey’s is part of a comedy circuit.

Every second Saturday of the month, starting Oct. 10, Sammy and Casey’s will be a comedy club.

“It’s a nice place to take your husband or wife to have some pizza, have a beer and see some great entertainment without going to Kansas City,” DeSpain says.

The headliner for the first comedy night will be Kevin Bozeman, who has been featured on HBO, Comedy Central’s “Premium Blend,” and “Star Search.”

Bozeman knew he wanted to be a comedian after treading the waters at an open mic night in Madison, Wis., in the late '90s.

“I always knew I had it in me. And I don’t have any other job skills,” Bozeman laughs.

Bozeman considers himself a setup/punch line comedian, like his favorites: Richard Pryor, Eddie Murphy and Jerry Seinfeld.

“I’m definitely not the Dane Cook variety,” Bozeman says. “I would consider myself more old school.”

Bozeman’s subject matter is all over the board, including bits about Subway sandwiches, parrots, little people, fruity drinks and witnessing a Ku Klux Klan rally in Maine. He also pulls no punches with members of the audience. For Bozeman, no subject is off limits.

“If it’s really funny, then by all means say it,” he says. “I don’t say things for shock value or have any specific category that I focus on. I talk about all of it.”

Bozeman mostly plays college campuses and comedy clubs. He has performed in Kansas City, Wichita and Topeka, but this will be his first visit to St. Joseph. And he can’t wait to see what the Joetown audience has to offer.

“I’ll make it so we can all relate. I promise St. Joseph will not get a show that’s meant for Nebraska,” he says.

Bozeman will take the stage at 7:30 and 9:45 p.m. Comedy night tickets range from $20 to $25 and there is no drink minimum. All patrons must be 21 or older. For more information or to purchase tickets, call 232-4000 or visit Geneo’s Pizza at 811 Francis St.
