School Bus Drivers Check Union
by Bob Heater
Friday, October 2, 2009

Drivers with First Student.the contracted school bus service for St. Joseph schools, met to take a vote Friday night. The question before the approximately 125 drivers was to vote in the Teamsters Union to represent them as the bargaining agent.

The drivers gathered at the First Student headquarters on St. Joseph Avenue and approved the question by a vote of 88 to 39 according to union members who attended the meeting.

St. Joe Now spoke with several First Student drivers Thursday with most of them saying local management was good, but some are upset about what they consider low pay and high stress working conditions.

The Teamsters have organized drivers at several other school bus companies in Kansas City area school districts.
