Garage sale at Copeland Baptist

Copeland Baptist Church, 2009 Walnut St., is having its fall garage sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. today.

Clothing giveaway

The Sunday school class at Trinity Missionary Full Gospel Church, 1510 Messanie St. in St. Joseph, will host a clothing giveaway from 9 a.m. to noon today.

LDS live broadcast

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints’ 179th semiannual general conference live broadcast from Salt Lake City, Utah, will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and beginning at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4 with “Music and The Spoken Word” presented by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir, followed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. by the broadcast.

This may be viewed on local cable channel 68 and at the church building No. 7 N. Northridge Dr. in St. Joseph, as well as through live audio and video broadcast at http://lds.org. For more information, call (660) 442-5235.

Garage sale today

South Park Christian Academy, 4405 S. 22nd St., will hold a garage sale and silent auction from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. today.

There will be furnishings, quilts, purses, gift baskets, a baby grand piano, Avon items and baked goods, as well as a concession stand with hot dogs, hamburgers, soda, hot chocolate and coffee.

Harvest supper at Bethany Christian

Bethany Christian Church, located 10 miles southeast of Stewartsville, Mo., will host its annual all-you-can-eat harvest supper from 5 to 8 p.m. today.

The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children under 12. There will also be a food sale, bazaar, kids’ booth and quilt raffle. Everyone is welcome.

Celebrations at Trinity Presbyterian

Trinity Presbyterian Church, 1108 S. 33rd St., has several reasons to celebrate on, Oct. 4. The Rev. Heather Walchar has accepted the call to become the new pastor at Trinity and her first official Sunday will be Oct. 4.

In addition, Trinity will celebrate World Wide Communion Sunday and the church’s fifth anniversary since the merger of Second Presbyterian and Westminister Presbyterian churches. Special music will be provided by several church members. A luncheon with entertainment during the meal will follow morning worship.

DeKalb Christian hosts singers

The Balyeat Family Singers will sing several numbers during the 9 a.m. service Oct. 4 at DeKalb Christian Church. The Prime Timers will provide a meal for the family at noon.

Then at 6 p.m., they will present a community concert in the park at DeKalb. Lutron Ministries (youth) will provide free hamburgers and hot dogs. Please bring your lawn chairs.

In the event of inclement weather, all the events will be held at the church. Everyone is invited.

Sunday events at Wesley UMC

Wesley United Methodist Church, Ajax and Pear streets, will be holding a chili cook-off and church council Oct. 4, following the second service.

Communion services will also be held, with special music provided by Dylan and Donna Bennett.

Revival at Clarksdale First Baptist

Clarksdale First Baptist Church will hold revival services from Oct. 4 through Oct. 7. Dr. Jay Scribner of Branson, Mo., will be preaching. The Green Valley Baptist Church praise team will lead music and worship. Sunday services will be held at 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Weeknight services will be at 7 p.m.

News from Zion

Zion United Church of Christ will launch its October worship schedule at 10:30 a.m. Oct. 4. The service will include the Sacrament of Holy Communion, with emphasis on World Wide Communion Sunday.

The congregation has prepared layette and health kits that will be forwarded to the Statewide Festival on Sharing, which will take place Oct. 17 in Sedalia, Mo.

On Oct. 18, the Agape Fellowship will host Zion’s annual chili-soup event. Serving will follow the morning worship. The free-will offering that day will be used for expenses connected with Christmas shoe boxes. That Sunday has been designated as kick-off day at Zion for this annual project.

Word of Life hosts OctoberFest

Word of Life Church, located at the corner of Cook and Riverside roads, will host OctoberFest 2009 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 4.

This annual outdoor festival takes place on the church lawn and parking lot and offers free games and food, as well as plenty of fun and entertainment for the whole family. Come for a lunch of brats, hot dogs, hamburgers, beverages, ice-cream and more. You can go for a stroll while enjoying the car and motorcycle show, enjoy the music and competition on the main stage or release your competitive side in the weightlifting competition or a game of ultimate frisbee. There will also be a crafts show, pony rides, face painting and much more.

Life Chain on Sunday

Missouri Right to Life’s Pony Express Chapter will hold its annual Life Chain on Oct. 4.

Come to the west parking lot of Bishop LeBlond High School at 1:30 p.m. to sign in and pick up a Life Chain sign (no homemade signs, please).

Cathedral hosts dinner

Cathedral of St. Joseph’s will host a “Garden Harvest” beef brisket dinner from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 4 in the auditorium of the church, 601 N. 10th St.

The cost is $7 for adults, $4 for children ages 6 through 12 and free for children 5 and under. Carry-outs are available, and sewing and craft items will be for sale.

‘Journeys in Faith’

Each Wednesday from Oct. 7 through Nov. 11, First Christian Church, 927 Faraon St., will offer Journeys in Faith. Dinner will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m., with classes following from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Classes are as follows: Infants and toddlers through pre-schoolers will enjoy stories, songs and guided play. Kindergartners through sixth-graders will enjoy Bible-based learning through story, music, art and activities. Seventh- through 12th-graders will enjoy faith-based discussions, fellowship and service projects.

Two classes will be offered for adults: A book study and discussion of “Bad Girls of the Bible” and what we can learn from them, and “Simply Christian: Making Sense of Christianity” for new believers looking to grow in their faith or long-time ones struggling with a faith that no longer fits.

A free-will donation will be accepted for the meal. Everyone is welcome.

Hope Fellowship serves St. Joe

As a part of St. Joe Serve, Hope Fellowship Church, 2921 N. Belt Highway, will be taking the gospel to the streets on Oct. 11. The 9 a.m. worship service will feature praise and worship from The Gospel Tones of Harmony 2nd Generation.

At 10 a.m., the congregation and members from other local churches will meet at Saxton Riverside Care Center at 1616 Weisenborn Road to interact with the residents. Jonathan and Jackson Stickler will provide singing and entertainment. The volunteers will play games, read Scriptures and visit with the residents.

At noon, the volunteers will provide an outreach at the Bartlett Center, 409 S. 18th St. Entertainment will be provided by the Saved By Grace praise dancers. Following their performance, volunteers will read and interact with the children. Refreshments and free storybooks will be given out at the conclusion of the reading.

Party will honor Carol Willis

A farewell party will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Oct. 11 in the fellowship hall at Wallace Christian Church to honor Carol Willis, who will be leaving the community. Ms. Willis has lived in the community for 24 years and lived in the St. Joseph area before that.

Ms. Willis would appreciate seeing and visiting old acquaintances as well as new ones. A basket will be provided for cards of encouragement, or cards may be sent to Carol Willis, 17433 S.E. Second St., Dearborn, MO 64439.

Sudanese activist to speak

Simon Aban Deng, a Sudanese human-rights activist, will speak to the public at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 14 at First Lutheran Church, 302 S. 10th St.

He is a Sudanese refugee who was enslaved at the age of 9. Having escaped slavery and immigrated to the United States, he travels the country addressing audiences ranging from the United Nations to middle school students.

He will speak of his fight against slavery and the present issues in Southern Sudan. For more information, call 232-8378.
