The Missouri Department of Transportation will hold an artist’s reception Nov. 4 to celebrate the completion of a mural at the Eagleville, Mo., welcome center on Interstate 35.
Sandra Bryant of Showcase Mosaics of Lynden, Wash., will be the guest of honor. The company designed and created the 44-foot by 15-foot mural, which features tiny pieces of colored glass. Showcase Mosaics was selected because its use of glass tiles was deemed the best and most unusual way to welcome travelers to Missouri.
The images on the mural depict Northwest Missouri’s history, geography and attractions.
The project was a cooperative effort of MoDOT, the Missouri Arts Council and a mural review committee — whose members are Eagleville residents and individuals with an art background.
The mural is being funded through a federal enhancement funding grant, which cannot be used to build or repair roads and bridges. Applicants cannot be limited to Missouri alone since the funding is federally based.
The public is invited to attend the informal reception and celebration, which begins at 1 p.m. at the center.
Women’s shelter planned
A Cameron, Mo., not-for-profit organization has been approved to receive $140,000 in tax credits to acquire a facility to house a domestic violence shelter for women.
The tax credits stem from the Missouri Department of Economic Development’s Neighborhood Assistance Program. Green Hills Community Action Agency will use the $140,000 to purchase a 4,000 square-foot facility to open the Cameron Women’s Shelter. The shelter will meet a demand for domestic/sexual assault services in Clinton and DeKalb counties, create two jobs, and serve up to 160 victims annually.
Neighborhood Assistance helps not-for-profit groups raise private sector funds, by providing partial state tax credits to businesses that contribute to approved community improvement projects.
