After another beautiful summer complimented by margaritas and lime beers, fall has arrived.
Boy, has it arrived quickly.
With temperatures in early October dipping into the 20s and 30s, people are packing on the layers and re-thinking the way they drink.
“I think people drink things with a higher alcohol content this time of year, and I know the girls like to drink something warm,” says Tom Mangos, owner of the Snake Bite Club.
One warm drink the Snake Bite Club offers is a coffee beverage with white creme de cacao and Frangelico, an Italian hazelnut-and-herb-flavored liqueur.
Mr. Mangos says Frangelico is a great addition to most coffee-based beverages, as is Bailey’s Irish Cream. Both hard liquors are mixed into the Snickers Coffee at Foster’s Wine and Martini Bar. The drink also includes Kahlua.
“It tastes just like a Snickers bar,” says Foster’s bartender Cody Crawford. “Hot drinks are in when the summer is over, and the Snickers Coffee is the most popular one we have.”
Considering Halloween and Thanksgiving are just around the corner, anything pumpkin-based is popular as well. Foster’s will bring back its Pumpkin Pie Martini as its featured martini this Friday. Mr. Crawford says the Pumpkin Pie Martini includes vanilla vodka, Frangelico, cinnamon schnapps, a simple syrup, half-and-half and a little bit of pumpkin pie filling. Foster’s visitors couldn’t get enough of the delicious drink last fall.
“People liked it a whole lot. I’m sure we sold at least five a night,” Mr. Crawford says.
For those who want something a bit smaller, head down to the Snake Bite Club for pumpkin cheesecake shots.
According to New York Magazine nightlife reporter Daniel Maurer, ginger, honey and butternut also make for outstanding fall cocktail flavors with the reds, browns and golds that are synonymous with the season.
But what about the legions of fruity drink lovers? For those folks, apple and cranberry beverages are seasonal favorites. Foster’s offers a Washington Apple Martini with Crown Royal whiskey, Apple Pucker and cranberry juice.
“It has a sweet taste,” Mr. Crawford. “It definitely isn’t a sour apple.”
Let’s not forget about pears. The Snake Bite Club’s caramelized pear martini combines pear-flavored vodka, pear wine and a simple syrup made from scratch.
And for those who don’t like mixed drinks, dark beers such as Samuel Adams Oktoberfest, O’Fallon Pumpkin Beer and Goose Island Harvest Ale are in season.
