Army National Guard SFG Charles Wood gives Mid-Buchannan high school students a crash course in self-defense Thursday.

Schools, parents and even students are getting excited about a new Missouri National Guard program that has nothing to do with recruiting. Sgt. First Class Jordan Bennett and Sgt. First Class Charles Wood taught a situational awareness course to three gym classes Thursday at Mid-Buchanan School.

“You need to be aware at all times and all places, so that you’re not the victim,” Mr. Bennett told the students.

“We’re not telling you to be scared at Wal-Mart, just be aware.”

And remember that girls aren’t the only victims, Mr. Wood said. A victim can be gone in 13 seconds or less, and it doesn’t just happen in California or Florida.

The rules the two men tossed out to students for discussion were simple things.

Walking with a purpose, walking with a partner, trusting your instincts, remembering where you parked, never leaving the garage door open, locking doors and windows, knowing your neighbors, not boxing yourself in, having a plan and telling someone where you will be were just a few ideas.

“It was informational,” said Morgan St. Clair, who asked and answered questions during the session. And that was a sentiment that Ian Komer agreed with.

“I see the students focused and paying attention,” said Bob Pierce, principal. “So I’m pleased with their engagement.”

The two soldiers also demonstrated pressure points and other actions that students could use to protect themselves.

School resource officer Sarah Hardin, a Buchanan County sheriff’s deputy, heard about the program at a summer conference and thought it would be a good one to bring to the school.

Presentations are already planned for schools in Gower, Lathrop, Plattsburg and Savannah, Mr. Wood said.

It has everything to do with recruiting!

Training children "pressure points" and other forms of attack while in military uniform is still a form of recruitment. The soldiers are on the clock for Uncle Sam, the only difference is this is indirect recruiting.

If they want to teach "situational awareness" in schools then volunteer on you time. Oh, wait the school can't allow that because according to a sub-clause in the 'No Child Left Behind' Act schools are required to hand over student contact info, or risk losing federal money.

The recruitment of children, babies really, needs to stop. How many kids are you willing to feed into the bloody war machine?

You have GOT to be kidding me.

This is absurd!!! What the hell is our National Guard doing teaching "situational awareness" in our schools for?

Chara, you're seriously behind this thing? You can be pro-military and not agree with this kind of thing. This is ludicrous!

What's worse is that they're doing what PARENTS should be doing, except they take it a farther. Pressure points? "Gone in 13 seconds?" Why in the world didn't the school resource officer do her own presentation, she is a school resource officer after all.

I still wouldn't care for the sheriff's department going around demonstrating pressure points, but it would sure be less creepy than our freakin' National Guard.

Get the damn military out of our damn schools, dammit. Let's give these kids a good 18 years before we inundate them with the oppressive military industrial complex.

One more reason my children will never see a government-funded school from a students perspective.

So......what do you folks have against out military? Perhaps if more children knew a little bit about self-awareness, and how to protect themselves, there wouldn't be so many kids hurt and killed every year. Anyone read about the 12 year old who had kids gang up on him and light him on fire? How about the kids who are beaten up almost on a daily basis?
Our military men and women are some of the brightest and best in the world. Why on EARTH would you have difficulty with them trying to help our kids?

What do I have against our military?

Well, let's just cover the broadest terms to preserve space.

Justified murder is still murder, but through the looking glass of our jingoistic American empire we call it "patriotic bravery". Then there is the inherent racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia, machismo, PTSD, recruiters lying to the poorest of the poor children with promises of wealth, education and and career security--only 6% of 50,000 Army soldiers receive full benefits. Then the cold shoulder from Veteran Affairs, fighting to get your benefits, and last but not least DEATH.

grandpacory,
Not sure where you get your information, but there's so much wrong with your post, I don't even know where to start. I will say this....you're SPEAKING to a military person. Perhaps you'd like to consider George Washington and the Continental Army as "justified murderers"? After all, they killed British Redcoats....to secure YOUR freedom. Maybe you'd like to make these idiotic remarks to the men and women who have fought in many wars from the American Revolution, to present day? Would you like to call me a "justified murderer" to MY face? As for the "racism, sexism, bigotry, homophobia, machismo, PTSD"....every single one of those accusations are lies. I don't know if that's merely you repeating what you've heard, or been told, or if you're the liar. They are, in fact, lies.
I won't deny there are some recruiters who lie. Heck...the recruiter that signed me up in 1980 lied. When they're found out, they're disciplined. Don't know if you know this, but military members are held to a higher standard of integrity than you would be. Recruiters who demonstrate a lack of integrity are handled. Your assertion of 6% of 50K soldiers receiving full benefits is another lie.
Death is something every single member deals with. It's not a bad thing....I'd gladly give up my life to help secure freedom and liberty. Funny thing....you're spending time typing all these lies, and I'd gladly give my life if it would help secure your freedom. Military members are WILLING sacrifices...not forced.
No one promises ANYONE in the military "wealth". We are offered education...something millions of military members have taken advantage of. Career security is a fact...not fiction.
Unfortunately, I can't stop you from spouting your lies and misinformation. I have no doubt that you can even find websites that would subtantiate what you've posted. They're still lies. I've been a member of the US military since 1980, and I've been all over the world, working my tail off to ensure you have the right to free speech.
I heard it said, once, that it's one thing to be thought a fool, but something else to open your mouth and remove all doubt. In your case, you posted your foolishness. There's no law against idiocy. There's no law against being foolish. There's no law against spout untruths and misinformation. You can thank your military for that.

For those of you who are against the military remember why you have your freedom and it is because of the people in uniform.I kinda like my freedom and respect these people in the military to the fullest extent. The nerve of some.I bet the ones who do not support our military are the ones who have not served and have wron the uniform.

Pops, you're absolutely right, I can find websites that prove my point. In laymen terms it's called a source and my source happens to be the government's own Assessing Pay and Benefits for Military Personnel website.

Whatever you may have gleaned, grandpacory, is either misunderstood by you, or a lie you've twisted to look like truth. I can tell you that men and women who serve all enjoy the same pay, benefits, etc. based on their rank and time in service/grade. Any assertion, sir, to the contrary is a lie.

You can't win an argument by calling someone a racist anymore than you can win it by claiming usage of a race card. I'm a white male, but I don't see the world as the dominant, war-loving alpha male.

If you notice, the word "male" is also in there. Does sex negate race now?

Face it, you want to shut me up as quick as possible and will use the same tired old slags to do it.

I don't want to shut you up...you have a right to your opinion...as do I. YOU, my friend, were the one who threw out the race card....not me. I wasn't the one who was taking what I said, and called it the WMWV......

I DO think it's interesting that you appear to despise the very things that ensure you have the right to spew your hateful, critical, inane tripe....

Pops, the Military Industrial Complex is far from the same thing as the Continental Army.

The Continental Army defended America. The military industrial complex has, well, a complex. Anytime someone farts in another part of the world we send in 50,000 troops to slaughter them, take over their country and then wave the fart away.

Comparing Washington to this current military is asinine.

One last thing, MM1967, I never once said I was against the military, I said I didn't want them in my schools, our schools. Just like playing the race card, you die-hard "America does no wrong" guys toss out your accusations of "unpatriotic" and "doesn't like our military" in hopes of the same goal; discrediting anyone who is making a valid point that you can't otherwise argue with.

Our military, for all their fine efforts, do NOT belong in our schools.

That being said I now understand why Napalitano made the assertion that returning war vets are "potential domestic terrorists." It's because our soldiers are catching on and it's making me proud.

I am making a claim right now - we will not see our troops return home during Obama's presidency. It's the only way to remove the most well-trained dissidents from the equation in hopes of halting the new American Revolution. Our government is afraid of our soldiers because our soldiers know firsthand what they have done and what they are told to do.

You can no longer hide these things in the information age. As much as I love technology, it will be conduit for the downfall of the American Empire and rightfully so.

I prefer to be number one, but not at the sacrifice of innocents that reduce me and my country to savage, empirical tyrants.

You say the "military doesn't belong in our schools". Yet many advocate so many OTHER groups should have access to our schools. Why single out the military? Has it escaped your attention that the "military complex" is made up of men and women just like you....they're your next door neighbors.
As for your assertion that the current military can't be compared to Washington's Continental Army...that is absolutely absurd. What a slap in the face of the very people who assure you of your right to spout such idiocy....

In the same vein, accusing someone of using free speech to speak out against the atrocities committed to obtain free speech is just more tail chasing or Oroboros, the snake eating it's tail.

If they fought for the right to only speak well of them in the future and never disparagingly, then you would have a valid point. but as it stands now, you're fighting against logic.

I am? How would YOU know?? I didn't accuse you of anything. I DID say it's difficult for me to understand how you can disparage the very people who give you the right to speak as you do. I also told you that while I disagree with you vehemently, I would also die to ensure you have the right to spread your hateful comments. Not sure how that's fighting logic.

However, since I'm not one to beat a dead horse....you go right ahead and disparage, criticize, and spread hateful lies and innuendos about the greatest country on earth. I only hope you stop, once in awhile, to thank God you have the rights and freedoms you have, and for the men and women who preserve those rights and freedoms for you.....
