Four different quarterbacks and a reverse flea flicker still couldn’t stop St. Joseph Christian on Friday night as they trounced Nodaway-Holt 60-14.
The Trojans (5-3) started off the game on the wrong foot when starting quarterback Blake Shamberger was injured on the fourth play of the game. In comes backup Zack Lemar only to get sacked in the end zone for a safety on the Trojans third possession.
“Whenever you lose your quarterback, who also plays outside linebacker, it gets you out of your game plan,” said Trojan coach Roy Noellsch. “When he got hurt, we just tried to do different things to see what worked, and we never seemed to find what we needed.”
Indeed, the Trojans did try new things, including the reverse flea flicker with third string quarterback Carson Long throwing a 41-yard touchdown to Dale Swartz cutting the lead to 32-14 late in the third quarter after a successful 2-point conversion.
However, the Lions (6-2) would come back with a flea flicker of their own to start the fourth quarter. To throw a twist in the flea flicker, fullback David Welchert threw a 37-yard score, instead of starting quarterback Luke Mathes, to Dylan Aebersold for a 46-14 lead.
“Having Welchert back really helps us,” said Christian coach Mark Juhl regarding Welchert missing three games due to injury. “He is a great blocker, and he really brings it.”
Daniel Gregory responded to the great blocking of Welchert and the offensive line of the Lions by running for 129 yards on 20 carries and two scores. A chunk of Gregory’s yards included a 55-yard sprint late in the second-half, helping secure a Christian lead and eventual victory.
“I really think our blocking did an excellent job this game,” Gregory said. “We predicted they would be a tough team to beat, but we came out and played our hardest and got the win.”
Mathes ran for 125 yards on 17 carries and also passed for 37 yards to go along with an interception on defense. Welchert added another 95 yards rushing to go along with a touchdown.
