An antiques mall with more than 50 vendors has opened on the Belt Highway — containing a mix of crafts, vintage and antique items.
Hinterland Mall opened Oct. 1 in the former Jackson’s Weekend Furniture, 3201 S. Belt Highway. It is open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily, and will expand and add more vendors as space opens. Currently, they are liquidating Jackson’s unsold furniture inventory.
On Thursday, antiquers milled about, attracted by treasures among eclectic collections of estate jewelry, vintage clothes and 19th-century furnishings. Though there has been no official opening, buyers were attracted into the former furniture store by a newly minted sign that drew motorists off the Belt.
Tim Shaffer, general manager, said there is about 18,000 square feet of vendor space, and that will more than double in the near future. He expects to liquidate all the deeply discounted furniture by next year.
The antiques mall and flea market has attracted local and out-of-town vendors. They range from the weekend estate-goers and artists to the packrats looking to unload and sell off their inventory.
“We’re talking about a lot of entrepreneur hobbyists that don’t want the overhead of a store and just want to rent the space. It’s a very simple business,” Mr. Shaffer said.
Booths are still being filled. There will be an official grand opening Oct. 23 through 25. The building is owned by Don Jackson.
