With H1N1 cases in the news, the Heartland Urgent Care Clinic has been hit hard.
This comes in the wake of doctor’s offices and clinics across the country being flooded with patients with flu symptoms.
“Every day, we hit new records from the day before,” said Dr. Adam Wineinger, Urgent Care’s medical director.
Flu cases account for most of this load, he added. And although the clinic doesn’t have a way to test whether a person who tests positive for the flu is experiencing seasonal flu or H1N1 — also known as swine flu — the CDC has said that all flu cases emerging this early are H1N1.
“I think people are worried,” Dr. Wineinger said. “We’re seeing a lot of kids, and a lot of them don’t need treatment. Their parents just want to know they’re OK.”
So how do you know whether you or your kids are sick enough to warrant a doctor’s visit or just need to wait out your symptoms at home? Dr. Wineinger noted that the CDC recommends people seek medical treatment immediately, only if they experience shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, confusion or severe vomiting. The exceptions to this are people who are over 65, women who are pregnant and people with low immunity or breathing problems. These individuals should call their doctor for advice if they experience typical flu symptoms, which include high fever, coughing and muscle aches.
Beyond this, Dr. Wineinger said the best thing people can do is plan to get the seasonal flu vaccine, and, if they’re in a high-risk group, the H1N1 vaccine as well.
“It can help tremendously,” he added.

I just want to know why both articles about urgent care here in St Joe are only about Heartlands urgent care. I like the other urgent care better, but due to my employer switching to community health this past year and the one on Mitchell was not able to take community health I either had to go to Heartlands, or get into my Dr which is what I did. Thankfully starting the 1st of January we are going back to bcbs and will be able to go back to the one on Mitchell again and I cant wait.
Why is everybody running to the doctor for the flu?
“We’re seeing a lot of kids, and a lot of them don’t need treatment. "
ApparentlySo
you are seeing a bunch of children because their parents are concerned and do not want anything to happen to their childrenLook at the 60 minute special last night where the H1N1 flu is hitting the young hard and filling up the critical care units at the hospital. People die from this crap.So this is why you are seing more children it also because of great parents that are concerned.
If this is such a outbreak at this point and we have children with respitory problems and other medical problem the schools are being pretty quite with the outbreak.I know I have said this before but they need to be telling us how bad it is in our schools for us parents of children with medical problems can make a decision on what we are going to do to keep our children out of the main stream and from getting into contact with this. These are the children that are dying and are filling up the hospitals.Maybe they have a plan for these children and staying at home and getting thier homework and turning it back in or something.
You're seeing people so freaked out because the media is freaking them out.
This is why it's absurd to pounce FOX news for their reporting. For every bit FOX news is biased, the other news organizations treat the president as the messiah. If one makes your stomach turn, so should the other.
People are scared because that's what the media, and probably the administration want. Remember Rahm Emanuel's "never let a crisis go to waste" comment. Be very concerned when you hear a presidential advisor say such things, your liberties are in their crosshairs.
I've still got this crap, and I'm not going to the doctor over it. I thought I broke my fever Saturday night but I'm not sure now. I didn't wake up in a pool of sweat (disgusting I know) like normal when breaking a sweat. My sore throat is gone but the body aches, coughing and congestion is driving me up a wall.
Anyone have any experience yet to compare symptoms and duration to?
P.S. Don't get down on parents for this - the media is scaring the crap out of people with their, "don't worry" one day and, "run for the hills, vaccine shortage!" the next. Parents are just scared and confused. Thank your government aka propaganda office.
mm1967-I totally agree. What about letting us know whats going on in the schools and their plan. Every day one of my kids are coming home telling me more and more of who is sick and who had a 106 temp. I am a mother of a child "with underlying conditions" and I would like very much to be kept informed by the school district or the paper (if they can get the info) on the schools' outbreak. The vaccine isn't even here yet unless you are a child between 2-4...not to mention kids that go to school who have pregnant family members would like to know.
Yes Liberty or Death, the media does play into this but thats also what we are asking ours to do-is report on it, and while many parents are seeking treatment, its because this thing can turn nasty pretty quick-especially the secondary infections like pneumonia. Parents don't want their kids to be a statistic of one of the unlucky ones. Still trying to figure out how long on the cough....because everyone I know who has had a virus is still coughing. Heck kids are coming back to school because they are "fever free" but the festery phlegmy cough continues. Just how long is one REALLY contagious for anyways? Some parents don't keep their kids home either-thats another problem.
SuzyQ, there is a difference between reporting facts and sensationalizing every single news story.
First it's two shots. Then it's a nasal spray. Now it's possibly 3 shots before finally admitting that it might not even be safe to begin with.
First they say, it's just another strain of the flu. Then they tell everyone who is older than 6 months to get the vaccine.
I mean seriously, JUST REPORT THE FACTS. If I wanted to be entertained or frightened I would watch It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia or research the current presidential administration, respectively.
Who says the vaccine is not safe? I mean just the facts on this as well from CDC/WHO or other legit.
This is a new strain of the flu, and its quite understandable that even the medical community doesn't even know for sure how the H1N1 is going to be. They cannot predict the future with certainty, but they are trying to safeguard for an adverse situation.
as for the 1-2 or nasal. From what I understand and told that children 2-4 have to have 2 doses for the vaccine to build enough immunity, but for older that one dose would work-I think.
I would like to know if anyone knows when the injection vaccine will be available here? After the outbreak here is over??
I know for a fact that one elementary school had over 100 out last Thurs-Fri and one middle school had nearly 100. I suspect the other schools are about the same.
What are the schools doing to sanitize? What is the school's policy for this when so many are out sick? I remember one time when they had to close the schools down to clean and sanitize and try to get the kids past this. Why is this not being reported on? I did appreciate the school's robocall the other day on keeping sick kids home-but I have seen nothing else on this, but you have to know just about every school parent out there is wondering.
"They" say that is fine for kids to go back to school after 24 hours fever free. I just wonder if that is working out very well with this H1N1 or flu that is apparently highly contagious.
suzyQ,
I have tried to get that same answer and I have been told that there is a shortage now of the vacine for the children with underlying health issues. The state transfer me to the dept that handle the immunizations and they were going to try and locate a different county around us and see if they had any of the vaccines and would call me back.I did talk to the other dept that is handling calls about the H1N1 and they quote could not believe our schools do not have a plan in place for these children with health issues. So who do you believe I tend to believe the state.I will let you know what I find out when they call back and a phone number for you is 877-358-4141 this is for the Dept of Heath.
What do you mean, "who says the vaccine is not safe?"
First of all, this is a man-made strain, SuzyQ. This did not just "occur" in nature. It is a combination of avian, swine and human influenza made in a laboratory. These are facts. This new vaccine was pumped out in record time, historically speaking, and it hasn't received nearly enough testing. The vaccine in 1976 took longer to develop (flu vaccinations and their creation haven't changed much in 30 years) and it killed more people than the swine flu did. It also created brain disorders and paralysis as well as numerous birth defects for later generations of vaccine recipients.
About the vaccination doses, you've got it wrong again. The CDC recommends 2 doses for adults, and possibly 3 for children. The nasal dose requires a subsequent shot to accommodate it. For the record, flu vaccinations are always made with the dead virus in the vaccine in the attempt at kick-starting your immune system to create antibodies specific to that strain. The nasal spray is a live virus that has been, "declawed," whatever the heck that is supposed to mean.
Let's not forget that Jacobson v. Massachusetts 1905 set the precedent for required vaccinations falling within the Constitution.
In any case, it seems you haven't done your homework when we've all had plenty of time. There is plenty of reason to question this vaccine a hundred times over.
I'm going to bed now. Do a little googling today, eh?
If the 1976 vaccine caused "brain disorders" we can assume the identity of one "victim" is known to us today.
My daughter had this H1N1 flu. It is not just another flu. It was horrible! Fever, coughing, and her throat was so sore that she just sat and cried. She could not sleep because she was in so much pain. She said it hurt her to breath! Then she started vomiting! My daughter vomited 7 times in 2 hours! I was scared to death! I have 3 children and never have any of them been so sick. I took her to the Dr. and they just acted like it was no big deal. Thankfully she is getting better.
In my opinion a lot of the nurses and Dr's are desensitized and it seems like they just care. The nurse told me, "this is just like any other flu, she midas well get it now and get it over with." A little boy in the waiting room with us was crying and saying he felt like he was going to pass out, and he was vomiting in a bag. Not a good sight! This poor little guy was very very sick! Just like any other flu huh?
And as for the schools, they had to cancel my sons field trip because their was not enough staff and so many kids were sick. I say be very very careful, especially if you have any thing else medically wrong with you. This is flu on steroids!
Liberty- You can find any nonsense out there googling, I am asking YOU where did you get your information and if it was from an official group- you are the one saying its not safe.
I am fully aware of the 1975 ordeal.
And I said I only thought thats what the doses were, I'm not sure-it keeps changing. All I know is what the nurse at the docs office told me. I had hoped she "was in the know" For all I know, it may have change since she told me that.
Vaccines and their creations have not changed much in 30 years?? How about testing for bad batches and safety? Man, to think I have been getting a flu vaccine for myself (and my children) for the past several years.
Isn't the H1N1 virus airborne? You can wash door knobs all you want but if it's an airborne virus it won't make much difference. As far as school distributed information I'm not real sure with HIPPA what exactly the schools can put out and what they can't. I'm guessing it's o.k. for them to perhaps put out a daily absence number but I wouldn't bet my backside on it. The medical privacy rules really changed over the past six or eight years, give or take a little.
Schools can under these laws tell us if and how many cases are in the individual schools but they cannot give the names of the children. They also could have a plan for the students with underlying health problems such as other parts of the country have done.
Right mm-they can give us details regarding how many and even symptomatology, but cannot give specific kids names. They can also tell us what they are doing to combat it and plans like you said for kids with underlying conditions. Actually, in something like this-its their duty to do so. I wonder if they don't want to get parents worried and are keeping mum.
I was told today by our Doctors Office if and when the schools hit 30% infection rate in the specific school they would close that school and some schools are over 20% at this point so it won't be long before they have to have a plan. Also I was told it may 3 more weeks before the vacinne for our children is avalible and the one they have to take is made the same way as the normal flu shot the only thing different is the strain of flu used to make it and it is not a live virius and it will take 1 weel for it to protect them after they get it unlike the normal flu shot takes affect imediately.I asked our Doctor to give us a note to remove our child till we recieved the shot and it took affect. These children can do all of their homework at home and turn it in.But SuzyQ as of yet there seems to be no plan in place the public knows about the doctors office told me about the above mentioned.
...and btw Liberty or Death - what do you mean this strain was "man-made"? This sounds like some brainwashing from "Campaign for Liberty" or some crud. I suppose you think 911 was a conspiracy by our own government, eh?
there is nothing the schools can do to "combat" the flu, parents should not send their children to school with a fever etc. you get within 10 ft of a flu patient you have been exposed and good chances of getting the flu. everybody is going to get immunized from the h1n1 by either getting the shot/spray or by getting the flu. many docter's er's urgent care's are not even testing the flu anymore, no point, they are not treating it in healthy people, so no need to test for it.
for actual accurate flu info http://www.cdc.gov/H1N1FLU/
and LOL to the man made conspiracy. quit watching the onion news channel, Pakistan learned this lesson, you should too. get your facts from a reputable source.
this is not a never before been seen flu, this is a hasnt been seen in a long time flu. many people born before 1950 have some immunity to it, this flu is worse in 3 ways, 1st. its spread so easily (aiborne etc) 2nd, a very small portion of the population have a very bad reaction affecting the lungs that can cause death. 3rd, since this strain is rare and similar flu's have not been seen in 60 years, we have no immunity to it, the other flu's are similar enough that when you get it, you have some immunity because you have had something similar in the past. 38,000 people died from the flu last year.... it just didnt get as much press.
the good news is that as far as flu's go, the symptoms of this one are not that bad as others i have seen, fever, sore throat cough that last 7-10 days, not many are getting the vomiting and diarrhea that other flu's often come with and when they do get it dosnt last as long.
the big symptom to watch for is shortness of breath, not due to stuffy nose etc. but because the lungs are working harder.
lumpyRN
No one is sayingthere is anything the schools can do to stop the flu I think what is being said chioldren with underlying health issues such as ashtma which by the way is a respitory issue and the H1N1 could be harder on these children what was being asked what plan does the school have for these children?
They can also keep up with the sanitizing. Closing school for a short time during an epidemic to help prevent the spread (if it reaches that point of so many being gone, keeping parents INFORMED when a particular school(s) have a large amount absent, and have alternative plans in place for those students that have underlying conditions, also I think encourage keeping kids home (whether fever present or not-if they are symptomatic otherwise) - thats what they can do. The influenza is still contagious beyond the "fever" phase, just not as highly...but still symptomatic-still contagious.
lumpyRn can you shed some light on the real skinny about vaccines and what is recommended? You are exactly right about the immunities in the young.
For what its worth, I have heard of people not getting much more than cold like symptoms with the H1N1 and others that require hospitalization. Thats the thing-just don't know how it is going to react in someone. And from what I have heard, it is targeting the young.
mm1967-I have an asthma child too and I hope every day that its not the day they get sick. Hand sanitizer in the locker/backpack, etc, extra inhaler on hand.
Did you mean you got an excuse from the doc for the child to be able to stay home?
SuzyQ,
I have asked they told us they would have something written up for us tommorow for the school. On the CDC web site it recommends keeping children with these types of underlying health concerns away from large populations where there is known to be the H1N1 flu.I was told by the doctors office that some schools are at 20% and if they hit 30% they would close but this is what the doctors office said not the schools. Our one child came home this after noon crying and seems as if they may be sick so we are going to have to watch them like a hawk. These schools need to proactive instead of reactive.
mm, if a plane crashed into your garage you would blame it on the schools. Give it a rest, will ya?
Orliandor,
You have no idea what we deal with children that have these kind of problems with the normal flu now children are dying from this flu so If you do not know what you are talking about on this issue mind your own darn business. You are out of line on this subject they need to have a plan for our children on the education side if they cannot go to school because of this till the vacine is avalible for them.
I got hit friday night with the flu,and still have the jitters, same with my wife and my daughter. My son came home with it thursday. The most mind bending vomiting ive ever experienced. Not trying to be gross, just trying to explain to those who dont know, this stuff is no joke. After all the violence was over,my body just wanted rest, but coupled with fever and a cough I could only sleep about a hour or so at a time, but we all survived, painfully so.
I am not sure if I am a buying the man made conspiracy theory, but anyone who take the CDC's word for gospel and does no independent research is a bit simple.
Well I guess the majority of the america is simple.Maybe poopcramp you should take a look at the amount of people in the emergency rooms and doctors office. The hospital last night was full of these cases with babys and children all crying and hurting and young adults sitting around ahaking and throwing up.CDC seems to have a front line of info on this not some goverment conspircy group.Oh my god the goverment is out to get us and kill us PLEASE.
mm1967-do you smeelllll something?
poopcramp- Are you saying some people have constipation of the brain and some people have diarrhea of the mouth? I think some have both? BTW-did you have corn for dinner last night?
conspiracy, yea like all the other right wing claims. want to know why people are and should be concerned especially about the young and teens in particular. since september there have been over 46 deaths in this age range. the average for an entire year, over the last 4 years, has been from a low in the 40's to a high in the mid 80's. fortunately the majority of people are taking this seriously and also understand how a virus can be spread and also mutate.
